My S has also applied to SCU and we are fairly familiar with the area. The good news is, there is a train station directly across the street from the main campus entrance. From there you can go up the peninsula to Palo Alto, San Francsico and other places. Other than that I don’t know much about what students do in their free time - I’d love to know as well. BTW, my son will not have car.

There are a ton of things to do at SCU when not in class!

The campus and neighborhood has a very active night life, and Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Palo Alto, and even the city itself have tons of places to go to. For those interested in sports, professional teams for major sports are all within an hour or so.

And for those without a car, there is a program called Zipcar, that loans out cars to students for a very reasonable price (insurance and gas included)…perfect for freshmen and sophomores

Our daughter is a recent SCU graduate. I’m not sure exactly how she entertained herself but she NEVER complained that she was bored or had nothing to do. She had a great group of friends and seemed to find plenty to occupy her time when not attending classes. I asked her once and she said there was plenty both ON and OFF campus to do. She also spent two full summers there and was never short on “free time” activities or things to do.
