Hi, I just got accepted to college of engineering and I was wondering if
illinois would be worth paying out of state tuition over wisconsin in-state tuition ??
Hows the social life ?? I heard the town itself is really small compared to Madison ?? What does your average day look like (including weekends) ??
I would like as much feedback possible :)
Thanks

Stay in-state, go to Wisconsin. That's my advice. You got into a fantastic institution that is 1/3 the cost, and you are still getting a very good engineering degree. Madison is much more fun than Champaign.

My roommate freshmen year turned down UI engineering. The kids @ UW are no joke. He was putting in some serious work.

Truthfully you should go to Madison. Party city!!!!! Way better than UIUC and a hell of a lot more better looking. If you go to that buidling that has a great view of the lake (sells ice cream and books and stuff), you would stay there forever.

Yeah as much as i like UI you should go with madison....
for most people weekdays mainly consist of studying( even tho a decent non engineering population have a habit of goin out 5-6 days a week) and then drinking during weekends... i wish i could tell u there was more to that but there really isnt. oh yeah basketball is pretty big here too

hehe anyone know about the business peoples social life?

They seem to have plenty of free time...thats all i can say :)

:) wheeeee! Thats what i needed to here :)!

yup, i hear that, damitsam!!

business school 2010 boy!!

lest i get in stern

I have the same question, but for OOS for both schools, we are in NJ. My S has been accepted to UIUC and UW-Madison, along with Penn State and Purdue, all for engineering. With tuition about the same for all the schools would you all still basically reccomend Wisc over the others, or are your Wisc recs based on the in-state tuition for Luckyboy22.

I would look into how strong the engineering program is, specifically in your major, PLANTREE. I know that UIUC has great engineering, as does Purdue. But I honestly wouldn't want to spend 4 years at Illinois.

My S is undecided as to which engineering are he wants to concentrate in. Ail the schools have many areas of engineering and are top 25 in each of the disciplines he is considering, ME, EE, NukeE, Materials, etc. His choice is going to come down to feel of the schools and what he interprets that the school will offer to him socially, scholastically adn spiritually. This thread is interesting that the strong trend is that on the social side Wisconsin is the reccomendation.

While it may not be worth paying 3 times the tuition to goto UIUC over Wisconsin, UIUC's engineering is still leagues ahead of Wisconsin. So i think your son should go with UIUC

UI clearly has one of the nations best programs, but you're comparing a top 5 vs a top 15 program. That's not "leagues" ahead.

Well, would you rather go to a top 5 or a top 15 program if you were admitted to both? Just go to wherever your S feels more comfortable being at.

I think you have it right there. At some point you have diminishing return on academic quality and comfort, cost, etc. start to matter

UIs enginerring school is in a way one of the best in the country. It may be in the top 5 but the matter of fact is that the top 5 are virtually equal and undistinguishable from each other. Companies do not distinguish between an illinois or a berkeley grad even tho berkeley is highly ranked than Ill. In a way for certain programs there is the top 5 and then everything else. During our engineering fair in which i volunteered several companies had set up recruits at only stanford, Illinois, G tech and berkeley. I am not saying Wisconsin's engineering program is not good but i dont think it can be compared to the nationwide reputation UI's engineering program has got.
Plantree your son might also wanna consider how severly cold it gets during winter at madison

no recruits at MIT?!?!? hehe

i know this is a stupid question,
but do recruiters come from all around the nation ??
So, if you accept the job, you move to their company's location ??

recruiting doesnt mean hiring, does it?
