Social Life/Partying

How common are alcohol and drugs at Tufts? Does partying play an unusually large role in student life?

lol someone comment, im interested

Supposedly you have to find parties, they won't be knocking down your door. Of course you have 250,000 college students in your backyard, so...

you can party. there is a small amount of die hard party kids, but most people stick to drinking 0 or 1 night of the weekend. It is a good balance. ps I go to Tufts so i know what I'm talking about

Do Greeks tend to party more than the rest of the campus?

Yeah, but this is (usually) true at any college.

yeah, the greeks are responsible for a lot of the partying on campus. i'd say like, 90% of parties you go to will be fraternity related unless you know some upperclassmen.

Approximately what percentage of the student body is a member of a greek organization?

15%, but doesn't dominate the social life according to the Tufts website. Partying is common at any college you attend, but there's nothing wrong with having a good time. :)

The Tufts website is right that Greek life doesn't dominate social life. I haven't been to a frat party since first semester of sophomore year and I'm now a second-semester senior. When you live off campus, going to house parties or hang out sessions at someone's house is much more common than going to frat parties.

You can party if you want to...just, most people prefer doing things other than going to the frats/houses (sometimes the houses have parties, like International House, Crafts House, etc)

tufts isn't known as a party school. you go to frats (obviously you get cheap, bad, hangover causing beer) occassionally they have extremely diluted vodka and ice luges. most of the time, the dance floors are empty or filled with guys... or extremely picky girls. not to say that there are a lot of easy girls there too.

however, the campus is often dead during weekends... sometimes there are no parties. often times there are lists to get into frat parties. however, if you have enough friends/connections, you can find parties among friends who have hookups. International House/Arts House/Chinese House throw the best parties. Hit those up for sure.

Noone ever goes to school sponsored dance parties at the campus center...

I'm a freshman, and that's the low down on the party scene if you're looking for fun on the weekends. Clubbing is pretty tough sometimes since the T closes by 1am and the club scene doesn't get good until later. Plus, many clubs are moving towards 21+. And yes, you can always go to another college for some parties... believe me, there are better party schools in Boston.

What if you don't really want to party? What do nondrinkers like to do weekends? Is there a large contingent of people who don't really like to drink?

Parties are going to be everywhere. If partying is not in your interest, there are plenty of other activities to do, especially with the variety of clubs, sports, and other groups. Additionally, Tufts is like what, 15 minutes from BOSTON! (My favorite city by the way) There's shopping, music and other forms of entertainment other than partying and drinking. As for your other two questions, I wouldn't know, because I'm not a student at Tufts.

I'd say the majority of people at Tufts don't drink alcohol on weekends. I'm guessing the number is around 60% that don't drink on weekends. That's a large majority of the people. At nighttime, people just like to chill out, do work, talk, play video games... or more importantly just sleep, since most students have many activities on the weekends. I'm on the ballroom dance team and we have comps that force us to wake up 6am in the morn. My roommate is in crew and he needs to sleep early for morning runs... at like 6am. Most athletes will find it necessary to remain dry over weekends if they are to perform their best on Saturday races/competitions. There are a lot of campus activities you can attend. Most of the time there are free movie showings as well. Somerville Theater is cheap, although a bit shabby, its close and has movies that are about 3 months old.

Going into Boston is a different story... when I first got to Tufts I went into Boston very often. Now, its more of a hassle to go into Boston than anything else. "15 minute T-ride" is a joke.

The time that it takes to get into Boston is as follows...
Getting to Davis Square from Tufts U
By Joey (Shuttle)... if you're lucky and catch it on time, then its 5 minutes.
By Joey... if you're unlucky and wait for it, then its about 20 minutes
If you decide to walk to Davis, its a 10 minute walk (I prefer walking)

Getting to Park Street (the first T-stop that's actually in central Boston), I would estimate is not 15 minutes, but more like 20 minutes.

If you're unlucky and the train JUST left as you get to the station, then its about a 10 minute wait.

Sooo... the worst possibility is that it takes 50 minutes to get into Boston from Tufts.

The best possbility is that it takes 25 minutes to get into Boston from Tufts.
My point is, getting into Boston from Tufts takes anywhere from 25-50 minutes, unless you have a car or decide to call a taxi.

Calculate that... make that a ROUNDTRIP... yeah, that's a lotta time you spend getting to where you want to go.

Regardless, I still go into Boston pretty often (paying $2.50 roundtrip)

nothing i hate more than ****ty beer and diluted vodka...

im going to have to bring my own **** up.

haha.

Boston is Boston. I don't mind travelling an hour to get there, because I LOVE Boston! I guess Boston's a big deal for me because I'm from cow-land, Texas. Such big difference!

Thanks for the great assesment dimagez! I've always been interested in ballroom dancing (even before Dancing With the Stars), did you have any experience before you joined the team at Tufts?

wow thats new information to me... i always thought tufts was a "work hard, play harder" school like cornell

Eh, I don't know, I went up there last weekend to visit, and went there twice from the Kendall stop, and from the Park Street stop, and it's really not bad, old bald "Joey" driver included, but I especially enjoy Boston, and have no problem with the 25-50min it takes to get there. DimageZ, what is your typical weekend then, just so I can have some perspective from a freshman....

thanks
