Social Life/Partying

oh come on that is so unrealistic. Even with transport time, i'm assuming you're going into Boston WITH PEOPLE, and while you're doing that you're socializing and talking and having fun. Really, what exactly are you DOING in Boston - could it be, hanging around with friends, talking and laughing? Because I often have more fun playing the hand game on the T and walking into Davis with friends than lots of other things.

Walking to Davis takes 7 minutes. I've timed it. And I'm 4'11, my legs are short, so it prob. takes other people shorter.

I've NEVER waited 10 minutes for a T in Davis. Five tops. And I really don't understand this person's perception of time - every time I go to South Station (the first T stop in Boston is Park, then Downtown Crossing, then South), it's taken 20 minutes. When my friends and I went to see Harry Potter 4, we took a car to the Loews at Park Street and got there about five minutes AFTER my friends who took the T.

True, I got sick of the frats really early on but I was never a big drinker, hate loud music and think I look retarded when I dance. NO DUH lol. You can do ANYTHING! For my birthday we went to Harvard Square to this awesome restaurant called Fire and Ice...we made T-shirts for everyone in our friend group covered in inside jokes...and how can anyone call the Somerville theater SHABBY? have you ever been INSIDE? The outside is old and crumbling, but inside it looks awesome. Nothing compared to the Park Street Loews, but w/e.

I think DimageZ paints a far worse picture than is true. People party! I swear! They often pregame in their rooms, too. My dorm is big and not that social, but I know some of the other dorms go CRAZY. I'm in chorale/Chamber Singers and even when we had dress rehearsals at 9 am, people showed up hungover/EXUDING alcohol, lolololol. I mean, our concert was during Homecoming Weekend, come on. I think during winter it was a little slower just bc it was so cold out and people would rather order Wing Works (omg, def. get the Honey BBQ tenders, UNBELIEVABLE) than head out into the blistering cold.

Haha i can't believe someone said Dancing With the Stars. You know the guy on it named Maksim? He used to be my dance coach...and let me tell you...worst human being on the planet. Seriously.

umm... I party almost every weekend starting Thursday... wait, is that bad?

LOL YJ i love you..."Thursday Nights Are Party Nights" was this girl's personal motto for a while hahaha

don't get me wrong, I love Boston too. It's just I get tired of it after awhile. Its not New York City, I'll tell ya that much. My friends agree with me 100% on that. Boston closes way too early that most of the things you want to do are mainly in the daytime or early nighttime, since the T closes at 1am... that's ALWAYS a problem. Calling up a taxi isn't bad though. If you split it among 3 other friends, it comes out to about 4-5 dollars each.

I didn't do ballroom dancing before I came to Tufts. In fact, I never even knew what ballroom dancing really was. Tufts' Ballroom dancing team is #1 in Northeast... occassionally we fall behind MIT for tops, but we're up there. That and our Bhangra team is #2... next to Rutgers, which has all of 10,000 Indian kids. I digress though. I came to Tufts not knowing what I wanted to do. I tried out a lot of activities to see what I liked and what I didn't like. I wasn't a dancer in high school... I dont think any normal guy is. However, after going to the Tufts Ballroom preorientation meeting, I just got hooked on it. Ballroom takes up my life, practically. Lessons on Monday and Thursday for 1-2 hrs. Practices on Tues, Friday, Sat, Sunday... all optional of course... but I go to most of them. Plus you get to mingle with a lot of girls... the guy/girl ratio is insanely low... like 1:5. There are a lot of Ballroom "lesbians" and "bisexuals" as they call em, since the girls don't have guy partners.

Anyhow... to answer the question of what I do on my weekends... well, ever since I got back from winterbreak, I haven't had a dry weekend.... I'll tell you that much. There's always some kind of Tufts sponsored event on Friday/Saturday nights. So I usually go check those out first... that's early nighttime. Afterwards, I drink with friends in our rooms... chat... play poker... play video games... order out Dominos/Espressos... after that we hit up the frats to meet up with friends. Party hop if there are other parties going on. Most parties aren't too popping unless you know a lot of the people there. That usually takes me out til about 3-4am. Get back to my dorm room... screw around... get to bed at like 5 or 6am. Wake up at like 2am. Go out for breakfast. Get some work done... and then go out again on Saturday night. I normally drink 2 days out of the week. However, there are individuals who drink 3 days out of the week, including Thursdays.

Obviously that's just the daily routine of a partier. My weekends vary with going out to eat with friends at Davis or Harvard Square. Anna Taqueria is damn good if you haven't heard about it... there's JP Licks too. We go into Boston and ice skate at Frog Pond. Or hit up Good Times Emporium for some arcade games, go-kart racing, laser tag, pool, etc... that's about a 10 dollar taxi ride though, so make sure you bring some friends so you can split that cost.

And Renee, I timed it too, and it is 10 minutes... and that's speed walking from South. And yes, I have waited 10 minutes for the T to get to Davis. I mean, you see like 3 trains go by heading towards Alewife, and then you finally see one train coming inbound towards Braintree/Ashmont. Waits for the T do get as long as 10 minutes. And the ride into Park Street is pretty much 20 minutes... time it yourself.

Anything else?

Thursdays seem to be quite a popular day to party and hang out. Why is that?

a lot of it has to do with the fact that people can arrange their schedule such that they have no Friday classes... therefore giving people 3 day weekends... EVERY week. Which is awesome... and which is what I had last semester.

Because Thursday is OC NIGHT!!!!

(just kidding)

phewww the no-partying vibe at the beginning of this forum was starting to make me nervous.

what's college without a few periodic blackouts!?

same here heehee

Yeah, I am now reassured though, heh. Thanks bluirinka!

Lol, anytime, guys. :-D

yeah i would say that there are plenty of parites available for those who want to party... I am also a freshman and yet I still manage to get out at least 2 nights a week.. I can say for lots of ppl in my dorm... I live in Houston... we first pre-game hard between 9PM-11PM and then hit the party scene... as mentioned before there are parties on many locations on campus whether it be frats, arts/international house.. (+other themed houses that i cannot remember).. there are parties at the Hillside/Latin Way apartments... there is plenty going on for those who want to party... Greek life may comprimise 15% of the student body but bear in mind that tufts only has 3 sororities... about 30% of guys join frats hence its a decent amount of ppl... This year most frats actually had large amounts of pledges save DU.. cuz tht frat is really sketchy.. I know this because I joined a frat myself...

And yes as the above poster mentioned ppl also go into boston on the weekend.. Tufts does have a shuttle that runs on weekends that picks ppl up from the city until about 230/3AM on weekends...

thats the lowdown that I have on the social life at Tufts

What are the students like by and large? Preppy, studious, phesdo stoner/hippy or a mix. Also is there more of a hook up, relationship or dating scene?
