cmu is a very good school academically alright, but like nothing else really happens after the first few weeks. i would not reccomend this school to many of you people here unless your version of fun is working until 3 am every night and not finding much fun around campus during the weekends.

You don't pay for college to have fun. If you wanted to have fun you should have went to a party school, or better yet, a summer camp.

But if you intend to spend your 50,000 a year wisely, that is, preparing for a future career in the upper echelon of science, technology and the arts, then you shouldn't complain about lacking a social life.

I would add that you don't have to work until 3 am every night to do well at CMU (in fact, getting that litltle sleep would be unhealthy and hurt your academic performance). Some classes are easy, others are harder, but there's plenty of time left to study and join clubs, work out, make friends, have fun, etc.

BTW, keep also in mind that a "social life" does not necessarily equate to getting wasted every weekend in some wild big-state-school-like party (again, that would be actually unhealthy and ** not fun ** at all !).

don't be afraid to go out into the city and do stuff, yeah cmu isn't the greatest place socially but fun can be had...sometimes

It depends on your definition of social life, yes CMU is not one of those outgoing schools seen on movies but it is not also the school filled with nerds.

I am a huge nerd. I really love CMU!

I think my deleted post said it all. Got me banned for a week too! hehe

My d is in the Drama department at CMU and hasn't complained at all about lack of a social life. She always seems to have something to do or somewhere to go. Have you ventured off campus? She seems to take the bus with her friends a lot to do different things. Her department always seems to have a lot going on during the weekends and evenings so maybe that makes a difference. Her only real complaint seems to be the food! Otherwise she couldn't be happier at CMU!

I would say Drama is sort of an exception. They tend to be a very tight-knit, outgoing group.

But ya, try going off campus if you're bored and aren't afraid of .... real people.

I just went to a paintball game down at riverside renegade. There were posters everywhere. That was a very social and very fun experience.

No offense to CMU, but the lack of social life on the campus is the reason why I decided not to go there, despite all of its academic promise.

Nonsense, on the lack of social life. As at any other university, it is what you make of it. Pittsburgh has the nickname "The College City". It is second only to Boston in student enrollment. There are over 135,000 college students in Pittsburgh. CMU and Pitt are in Oakland, actually adjacent to one another. There is always something going on in the area. If partying is your thing, you can definitely find plenty. Now I must say that if you are really interested in spending a lot time partying, do yourself a favor and save yourself tons of money. You can easily find a school with much more reasonable tuition. If you want a top notch school with opportunities for a well rounded college experience, then CMU might be for you.

The other day I ran across some girl who was like "why did I ever come to CMU? It sucks here!" And I asked her what was up... turns out she never left campus.

Really people, LEAVE CAMPUS. Like go out and do things. Go for a long walk. There are no parties on campus anyway; they're all off campus.

After I told her that, she was like "oh... I guess..."

Hmmmm lack of social life.... well lets me just say this.... NOT I have a very large social pool. IF i wanted to I could go out pretty much every night. IF I wanted to I could party every weekend. those ppl that say cmu has no social life are socially inept. Sorry that is just the truth

also with respect to spartan's comment.... that is one reason why i love CMU.... everyone can find a niche. Nerds can ... jocks can.... party ppl can.... like i said b4 ya just gotta put yourself out there

I'll trade BU for CMU :/
