Social life/rules at Villanova: rumors vs reality?

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to check this out! :)

When I first started looking at schools, Nova was my premier choice by a mile. I loved the friendly atmosphere and everything about the campus...but then I got accepted to BC, which sort of stole my heart. Having said that, Nova offered me a great financial aid package which was surprisingly MILES ahead of that of BC, so I might have to take them up on it. My only major concern about the school is the social scene--or apparent lack thereof.

I've heard some pretty contradictory things about life at Nova so I just want to sort out fact from fiction. Is there really that much of a lack of a party scene? Maybe there aren't huge parties every weekend, but if you look in the right places, will you find anything? Is Nova actually deserving of its nickname "villanofun"? What are some of the rules that give the school a stricter atmosphere than elsewhere? Are there actually curfews of some kind, or is that just hearsay?

Thanks so much!!

Apart from the activity on-campus and in adjacent neighborhoods, keep in mind that you can take a train and be in the center of the 5th largest city in the US within 30 minutes. (By the way, the US Census reports Philadelphia just beat out Phoenix to again become Number 5).

Also, there are 10 other colleges nearby with their own activities. Almost all are accessible from Villanova by public transit.

To help decide on Villanova or not, you should also spend some time in Center City Philadelphia, which is an extremely vibrant and interesting place.

Regarding:
1-“My only major concern about the school is the social scene–or apparent lack thereof.”
If you want to go raging 4-5 nights a week , wrong school , if you want to go out thu , fri , sat , no problem. You can party in your dorm if you are discreet and have a cool RA.Campus Security can be a pain if you are caught on campus under age drinking.
Nova is probably equal to BC party / strictness according to students that have friends/siblings at BC , BC does have strict on campus rules regarding under age drinking. Providence is the place to go if you want a catholic party university.

2-“Is there really that much of a lack of a party scene?”
If you are reasonably social you will find places to drink and people to party with the very first weekend. Many freshman are transported to the ER for alcohol poisoning , so know your limits.

3- “Maybe there aren’t huge parties every weekend, but if you look in the right places, will you find anything?”
If you want you will find a place to party every weekend. Off campus frat parties , ticket parties in Philly , club sports related parties etc.

4-" Is Nova actually deserving of its nickname “villanofun?”
It is no fun if you don’t find friends and hole up in your dorm. You will have fun if you try.
The kids here work very hard and play hard , sometimes too hard. But they hit the books Sun - Wed!!

5- “What are some of the rules that give the school a stricter atmosphere than elsewhere?”
There are rules regarding alcohol , but most are largely unenforceable. Be cool , make friends with the RA , dont come back to the dorm vomiting in the hall bathroom and you will be fine. It’s not “Animal House” but it’s not a monastery.

6- “Are there actually curfews of some kind, or is that just hearsay?”
There are in room opposite guest curfews , but there is not a personal curfew or bedcheck. You are treated as an adult. In season athletes may have team rules curfew , but I dont think that is what you are asking about.

I heard the the March Candidates weekend had a few drunk visiting high school students.
On the weekend of ESPN college gameday , the campus was in a 24 hour party.

Good luck on your decision , go where you fit best.

You will be bored on Villanova’s campus only if you are boring…

The limits on overnight guests (after a certain hour) has one advantage - the roommate can get back into their room to get some sleep.

Are sororities and frats a big deal at nova? And how difficult is it to get into a sorority?

thank you guys so much for all that info! that was really encouraging. I’m not looking for a huge party school I just want to be sure that life won’t be dull before enrolling :)

thanks again for being so helpful!!

I have had three very close friends attend Villanova and they have all absolutely loved it. I have gone out with them and there is a very fun night life at Villanova. Tons of parties. The rumors are very untrue. I even hear that BC is one of the strictest schools. I was just accepted to Villanova as well and I think that is where I am going as of now!

Guys if you are looking for fun do not attend Villanova. All the girls are in sororities like roughly 35%. Almost all the good looking girls are in Tri delts or KKG. A lot are completely stuck up according to the upperclassmen in my fraternity. We (fraternity or rugby) don’t even mix with them. Start of freshman year wasn’t too bad but it it such a pain in the ass I am thinking about transferring. I probably went to some decent parties, but the frequency of parties is literally 1/10. This semester a lot of guys only went to between 1-5 parties. You are stuck dorm drinking on west. Yes, I have been to the courts at least 8 times last yesterday (*tie apartments owned by villanova frats can fit only 60 people max) and the mansion. I am on the rugby team and am pledging a fraternity. Do not tell me I am not looking at the right places. Rugby was banned on our campus and we finally got back. School hates us. This school as strict as it gets. The Dean was writing people up in the Quad(where the sophomores live) on St. Pattys day. party is so lacking here. Also, since there was a student death last week at the courts, I’d highly doubt we can party at the courts for the rest of the semester. The cops are real *s I have drove some nights to some parties at seniors houses out in Conch. and I get pulled over twice. They will bust so many parties they busted us couple weeks ago. Cops are *s because we are in a super rich neighborhood and they are overpaid +staffed. No one is doing anything illegal when there are million dollar houses everywhere. BTW if you are a girl you cannot live more than with 3 girls or it’s considered a brothel. Also, the RAs can be complete dbags. Luckily, I’m in a dorm where they are cool but they do * like randomly open your room and check your frig for alcohol. They check bags outside manguire when people try to bring alcohol in. This school is a huge no if you ever want to party. Do not make the same mistake I did and think there are students here we can party. Parties are hard to come by. Yes, I will be honest I am contemplating transferring. I already have great friends here that we will be friends for life (slept over their houses a couple nights)
