Social Life/Weekend Activities

When I visited William & Mary, I really liked the campus, but I wasn't sure if Colonial Williamsburg would really offer a lot of social opportunities. When I asked my tour guide what students typically did on the weekends, he mentioned "delis," but he also said that you probably have to be 21. What kind of social opportunities are there for lower classmen and what type of activities do students partake in on the weekends? Is the campus dominated by Greek life?

The units (frat houses) are pretty much where a large portion of the lower classmen spend their time on the weekends. The frats are responsible for most of the parties on campus and are the main provider are cheap alcohol to underclassmen. So, yes, the campus' party/alcohol scene is largely dominated by Greek life. Keep in mind you don't have to be a part of a frat to party, however, most of the people who are big into partying do eventually find a frat house that they always spend the most time at on the weekends and end up pledging.

If you don't drink or don't like going to the units you can pretty easily find something to do on the weekend. You will be living on a floor/hall with 20 or more kids many of whom will probably become some of your closest friends - and not all of them go to the units every weekend. So lets say you have 10 kids who didn't go to the units that night, it should be pretty easy for you guys to put your heads together and think of something to do - go to the movie theater, go play basketball or football, play video games, watch TV, just hang with your friends... and making fun of the drunks when they come back to the dorm is surprisingly entertaining as well...

Va Beach/Norfolk/Richmond are close. If you like the outdoors, bike trails and windsurfing are available. canoeing on Matoaka/ concerts @ Matoaka/ Intramurals sports are also very popular.
