Hi! I really love Barnard! I applied regular decision, and I hope that I’ll get in! I have some questions about the social life, however. I am from the south so new York would be a very big change. I come from a very sports oriented city. I’ve heard that most students aren’t that into the football or basketball teams, but if I went to Barnard would there still be a solid group of students that I could go to Columbia football and basketball games with? I’m not expecting rabid fans, but a few people who actually care about the teams.

Also, what is the workload like? Do people have enough time to explore the city under the pressure of the workload?

Thank you to all those who will answer my questions! I really love everything I have heard about Barnard, and I hope to be there next year!

Hey, Eccm93! If you are from the south, I am assuming you are accustomed to SEC football. My daughter attended Barnard and is also from the south and grew up loving college football…we are big Alabama fans (I am an alum) and both of her siblings attended SEC schools as well. She went to exactly one football game at Columbia and said it was actually smaller than her high school! Admittedly, the high school here is pretty large, but you get the idea.

There, of course, are people who go to games. I am pretty sure she went to more basketball games, but not that many. I imagine you could find people to go with.

The workload is significant, but not so much that you cannot spend time exploring the City. It was a wonderful time for my D and she returns to NYC at least once a year to visit friends. We also love going!

Best to you! I hope others (actual students and not just a parent!) can give you more information!!

Thank you for the information churchmusicmom! And congratulations on Bama’s national championship! Did your daughter find it hard to adjust to NYC?

Not at all!!! She LOVES it there and her dream is to some day return.

She had actually spent 3 weeks down at NYU the summer before her senior year of HS for a dance intensive. Also had been there a few other times for dance stuff. So she had some experience with the City and was beyond excited to be there.

I know it’s intimidating to think about before you have been there, but trust me. You will LOVE it! And the upper west side, where campus is, is relatively quiet and peaceful…not as hectic and crazed as down by the theater district and such…
