For current students, what is the social life at UVA like? Do most people go out and drink on weekends? Do a lot of people go to campus sponsered events on weekends? Are there a significant number of people who stay in? I've visited W&M and it seemed like there were a lot of people staying in. The frat parties were basically dance parties. How does UVA compare? I've heard a lot about the school's social life, but I'd like to hear what current students have to say rather than a college book.

uva weekends -- 80% drunk fests, 20% other activities

Generally, parties start on Thursday nights and end by noon on Sundays. But note that I don't mean continuously, just during nightimes.

You can either study all the time, go out every night, or do both. At UVa, the classes are challenging but not impossible so you have time to do other things. Therefore, the social life here is such that the spectrum is wide, you have freedom to choose, and you can achieve simultaneous success in both extremes.

However, I believe as a first year, you'll end up doing everything if not out of pure curiousity then out of eagerness to make friends and immerse.

I went out frequently my first year, went to many campus sponsored events (concerts or football games) my second/third years, and for my fourth year I'm more selective and hang out with a smaller group of friends.

The balance is such that you study hard and party hard; as long as you don't get wasted during parties and can maintain your efficiency.
