What is the social life like at U Maryland. Are there alot of things to do around campus. Are there frequent parties, with loads of people there. Are the girls hot? Overall how would you compare Maryland to other schools, (especially to U Madison at Wisconsin, - as that is the other school I am considering). Also, i DONT want to know which school would be more fun. I want to know what the social scene is like (descriptively), and how it compares to other schools.

both schools are very social. I applied to both also. I am going to UMD for the reason that I am directly into the business program. What is your major?? Engineering and business are absolutely excellent at both schools. The sciences go to Wisconsin and the journalism goes to UMD.

Both schools are big on sports. I applied to schools that like to have fun like wisconsin, penn state, texas, and UMD. All are great at sports and all have crazy sports scenes. UMD was ranked number 1 in the catagory- students who pack the stadiums. Both are going to be sport crazy places.

Wisconsin is more of a party all the time. It was ranked the number 1 party school where as UMD was ranked 20th.

Both schools got "A-"s for the girls and "B+"s for the boys by college *******.

Social life at College Park is jumping....my d. had friends visit from several other colleges and they all thought maryland was one of the nicer schools they'd been too...and great social life. If you are looking for lots of bars, there aren't many...Bentley's, Cornerstone, Santa Fe...and few more, but that's it. Lots of parties on Frat row though.

Unless you have a good id, or you're a hot chick with a *****ty ID, forget the bar scene. It's 21 and over, and you won't be getting in.

Even if you don't want to join a Frat, attend events at the various fraternities during Rush Week. This will get you into contact with the brothers, who will be hosting various parties that they'll invite you to in hopes of getting you to pledge. If you do wind up pledging, that's a key to a pretty much instant social life once you're initiated, depending on the fraternity.

There is tons of drinking to be done. If you want to drink, and are social, then you WILL wind up drinking. Try to get in good with somebody who has a fake ID or knows an upperclassman, because the liquor stores in CP are pretty strict with IDs, and they will get confiscated.

The rowdiest dorms are Easton and Denton. They also get absolutely trashed on the weekends, and are pretty beat up, so try not to live there. But they are absolutely insance when it comes to Dorm Parties. I lived in Ellicott my freshman year, and spent most of my time at Easton. On the weekends, the bathrooms were always covered with urine, feces, and vomit. Over at Ellicott, this happened very rarely.

If you want to do something besides drinking, there are always events going on at the Union. Whether it's catching a movie, a performance, dances, attending a lecture with a guest speaker. There's tons of stuff to do on campus.

I would absolutely recommend opening a Chevy Chase checking account. Those are pretty much all the ATMs you will find on campus, and you will be getting killed with fees if you don't have one. The other choice is to go to Wawa, or BoA if you have a Bank of America checking account.

Also, don't be stupid and get caught smoking weed in the dorms. Getting caught smoking in the dorms is MUCH worse than getting caught outside of the dorms. You will undergo drug testing for at least a year at the minimum, and possible lose your housing with a deferred expulsion from the school.

As far as the girls go, you get a lot of JAPs (and no, I don't mean Japanese). But there are also a lot of VERY cool girls. It's just a little bit harder to pick them out. If you're looking for girls with actual decent personalities, don't go looking at a party, go looking at sponsored Campus Events. If you're looking for a girl to hook-up with, go to a party. It's just about finding a balance of the two.

so you say there are a lot of rich stuck up jewish people? In general is the campus stuck up and are there a lot of people that are rediculously rich?

Cheap, it's bound ot be like any other campus. Surely not as many really really rich kids as you'd find at an Ivy or NYU, but sure, theyre going to be there.

If you want to see what the student body is like, check out various myspace groups. That method helped me rule out some schools early in the application process.

Yeah, I guess you are right. I have been looking at as many different things as possible to find people from UMD online. I have went through a little on myspace and have looked at pictures and have even tried to find videos.

I know my original JAP comment could come off as racist, but it wasn't meant to be. It's just that I chose to use that stereotype to describe a decent number of girls on campus of every creed.

As far as there being a large # of rich, stuck up people...no, there's not. HOWEVER, and that's a big however. You have a lot of people coming from NY and NJ (if they people you meet aren't from MD, then there's a good chance they're from NY/NJ) and they are typically spoiled, and have a lot of money. I'm actually from NY myself (LI more specifically), and this stereotype for Long Islanders never rang true until I went to UMD and met other LIers. A lot of 'em really are just pompous jerks. But the majority of people I met my first year at UMD were very sociable, and very cool. I wouldn't say that the campus is stuckup or rich at all. For the most part, it's median-middle class people.

i'm from LI. and i don't think of myself as a JAP at all..u'll find me at campus sponsered places more than frat parties hahaa, so yeah. that's me. =)
