Social Life

Hey guys -- i've also been accepted to UR for the class of 2010. As of right now, it looks like that's where i'll be attending. I'm so excited! But, I was wondering what the truth is about the social life there? How late do the buses run to go into the city? Also, are there dance clubs and bars that the students often go to.. or are most of the parties on campus (if there even are parties!). I love UR and i'm hoping that my next 4 years will be tons of fun--- thanks guys!

Buses run pretty late... (You always have taxis as well)
Yes, there are parties on campus...

party in my room every friday night baby! lol

yeah i realli wanna know. how is the social life? wth do they do at UR to be entertained since u know its freakin COLD most of the time. i don't think i wnana walk to someone's party if its snowing .

and speaking of walking (sorry for interrupting) how good is the public transportation as well - you can get everywhere without a car, right? thanks...

there are tunnels connecting all the buildings...so it doesn't matter if it's snowing or hailing or hurricaning...u get the gist...and transportation, there are buses very often to wherever u wanna go...at least to wegmans and places near by, and i think downtown as well...yeah, u don't absolutely need a car but it would make it easier...just get a ride from an upperclassman with a car...

UR is definitely not a party school, thats for sure...but social life is very much alive on campus - thanks to people like suman =)

wait suman are u sure its every building i thought it was just select few main buildings and like the gym thats it

Not every building is connected by tunnels (sorry science majors)...
The quad and wilson commons are connected to each other as well as Sue B. and Spurier as well as Phase

hell yeah! social life will be on fire this year!
and yeah, it wasn't every single building but close enough...ok, fine so every single building isn't connected but u gotta have fun in the snow at times...i call snowball fight the first day it snows!

My host walked us from the Rhush Rhees Library through a tunnel that led straight into Hayden (the math building) and the Carlson Library - which connects to the Science Building lol.

Are the tunnels as confusing as they are said to be? I didn't check them out when I visited.

As far as I know there is no tunnel to Hylan... The closest exits at the Warner School at which point you have to walk to Hylan/Hutchinson/Carlson... And it wouldn't even be allowed by firecode if there was one (the reason as to why there is not one connecting Sue B to the back of the library...)

Make sure you have your RA/Freshman Fellow take you on a tour of the tunnels... They can get confusing for newbies...

suman you live in south jersey? where at i live right by philly and i might be comin to rochester, so if i do..thats two indians that will burn that mofo wit partyin

Tunnels are not that confusing, they take a day to get used to.

Uh...UR is a party school if you want it to be...

Seriously, you can go to the frats wed, thurs, fri, sat, and sun. And there's probobly something going on.

If you want to party or be social, plenty of places to go do that.

if you want to study, there are plenty of places to study. There's a hidden (well hidden to me because I can't find it anymore) stairwell that leads to the sub-basement which has desks and what not, but almost no one knows about it, so it ends up being really quiet.

As for tunnels. Well...It's ok. once you get to wilsons or Sue B, your fine. But if you live in Gilbert or Hoeing it iwll be a 40 second walk to the tunnel system. The housing quad is isolated from the tunnels.

haha hell yeah we will...i'm in erial aka sicklerville - same zip code, different city names...where u exactly? cause cherry hill's like 20 minutes from me...

what about the city of rochester.. are there a lot of clubs and cool things going on? like.. as a freshman, how easy would it be to go to bars and dance clubs? (transportation wise and what's available)

The big parties are readily accessible through pre planed transportation.

As for the major clubs most of the good ones are on the bus route which is free for UR students.

It seems like everyone on this thread is equating social life with drinking, partying, and clubbing..

How about making friends and just doing things like going to concerts or movies? And are there smaller parties without alcohol? Do students get together to have intellectual conversations and do kinda nerdier things like play cards and board games instead of either studying all the time or partying? Or is that just more of a high school thing?

Oh yeah.

I'd like to break up social life as it is at UR. One half is Drinking, partying, and clubbing. Plnety of that.

On the other hand there's just hanging out, getting coffee, playing LAN games (we have a UR dedicate CS server, and two people who are working their way up the CAL system), many people playing WoW (we have one guy who is the best paladin on his server with an accont value of 200,000$ [he got an item from a dungeon boss that has a drop percetage of .01 which allowed him to forge the strongest weapon for pali]), just talking political, talking philosophical, just talking about teh girl from the other dorm who's being a *****...ya know plnety of stuff.

And my hall actually alternates on non test weeks between going out and partying and staying in and losing 50 dollars to people in poker / playing madden for inordinate amounts of time. Or my personal favorite, a hall wide lan party where i kick the respective asses in starcraft.

Intelectual conversations happen a lot, it's kind of inevitable. Even among the heavy partiers you see it, not as often, and not as complicated, but you see it.

I actually have formulated an argument against Universal healthcare on the premise that it isn't feasible, and I equate making an effective universal healthcare is like making communism work (I'm a moderate politically, I enjoy hearing other's opinions, my personal stances vary topic to topic and I play Devil's advocate constantly, so in case anyone reads this and gets into a heated disucssion. More likely than not, I agree with you, but it's boring to just agree.)

Yeah, haha, acutally that's an ongoing one. That and "everythign is freakin radioactive, just becuase one thing is more likely to cause cancer doesn't mean you can go around saying that's bad for you 'rawr'"

Anyways, now that i'm rambling on....yes we have social lives outside of drinking and studying. Not everyone likes to drink or study anyways, so there are other things inbetween to do. Heck I ballroom dance (we have a huge formal Vienesse ball! one of the only ones in the nation, come and enjoy it! [all proceeds goes to cost and URCO general funds])
