How is the social life at tech? I have heard crazy things about not having a social life at all, dropping out etc. I am an outgoing female who wants to have a typical or as close to typical college social life as possible. is it possible? Also are the sororities good at Tech?
My DD is a 2nd year from out of state at Tech and in a sorority. She loves Tech and has a very good social life. She was sort of shy in high school, but has become more outgoing at Tech. I visited her two weeks ago and all her friends seemed very happy. Whenever I call her she seems busy with friends doing the normal college social life sort of things. When I visit, I see that the students seem happy and are in groups of friends.
She surprised us by rushing and decided to do so after attending FASET. She noticed that all the students who were very active at Tech that she met were in the Greek system so she decided to rush. She loves her sorority and being in one means she doesn’t have to focus on her social life and instead can focus on academics. ((By the way her social life is more than just her sorority). There has been a huge increase in the number of students rushing the sororities that are part of the PHC which meant last year for the first time not every student would get a bid. The sororities just voted at accepting one more national sorority which will be starting a new chapter in the fall so there will be more spots available. There are also other sororities such as engineering based etc. If you want to learn more about the sororities, look at their facebook pages and twitter accounts. I think Greek Week is coming up so you can learn more about the sororities.
Tech has sports teams such as club or intramurals, an assortment of clubs, and organizations so your social life can be as busy as you want it. For freshman there are FLO’s which plan social things for the students. Grand Challenges takes the students to plays, What is important at Tech is to have good time management skills so that you can handle the academics (which are rigorous but not impossible) while having time for a social life. Fortunately my DD is strong in that area.
Thank you so much. Very informative and helpful. DO you happen to know what the best sororities to join are?
I am a member of one of Tech’s sororities. Each sorority has its individual strengths and weaknesses. I would suggest coming into Tech with an open mind about the sororities, but as the above poster mentioned, feel free to learn more about the Panhellenic Council and each individual sororities. http://panhellenic.gatech.edu/
My DD is a first year at Tech and is also in a sorority. She loves it! It is a time commitment - especially the first semester - but, she feels it is worth it. She has made great friends within her chapter, but she also remained close friends with girls that were in her group during recruitment. Next year, she’s living with girls that she met during recruitment and they are in four different sororities! There seems to be a really good Panhellenic spirit at Tech. I think everyone is excited about the new chapter that will be colonizing there next year. And, my daughter is also involved in many other activities at Tech. I think that’s probably true of most girls in a sorority at Tech.
