Hi, I’m a prospective student at Furman. I love the campus and the academics but I’m not so sure about the social life. Furman certainly gets the stereotype of being boring. Is this true? What is social life with the Greek system like and do students tend to go out much? Or is partying not the norm?
As a current freshman, Furman is far from boring. What I like about the school is that it’s exactly what you make of it. Some schools are completely set on academics and others only focus on the partying aspect of college. Furman has both and you can figure out which side you prefer or find a nice balance of both. I recently joined a sorority and love the Greek system here as I feel as though it’s not the expected and stereotypical idea of what sorority women are like. They know how to have fun as well as work hard and make you immediately feel welcomed. It’s less about getting in based off of looks and more on who you are, your personality, and how you would fit in with their chapter here.
As for going out and partying, there’s a bar nearby that some students go to during the week and others go to on the weekends. Lots of students also prefer to have smaller get togethers in their own rooms or wait for the weekends to go to frat parties. Theoretically (and I do know a handful of people like this), you could go out multiple times a week and find something fun to get into but it’s not needed nor expected. Bottomline: Furman isn’t boring and yes, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for a fulfilling social life. Some people aren’t into partying at all and others party all the time, but most are in between. My biggest advice to you would be to start off small, be safe, and remember the main point of being here: academics. Furman might not be the most well known school but it’s very rigorous and easy to get behind. I absolutely love this school and feel as if I get the best of both worlds and a great all around experience since I have the social aspect and am still being challenged in the classroom with top tier professors.
Regardless of where you end up, I wish you well in your decision process and college experience! Trust me when I say it’s 10x better than high school. Best of luck!
Thanks so much for your insight! It means a lot to hear someone speak so well of Furman. I am looking very hard at the school and expect to most likely attend there next year.
