i read on another thread that if someone wants parties they should go to princeton, upenn, or dartmouth (in terms of ivies). i was just wondering what the social life at brown is like. do people mostly just hang out in small groups of friends or are there a fair amount of parties as well?

room parties and bad frat parties with plenty of bad beer to go around

amor, as an incoming social chair, i'd like to hear why you think the frat parties are bad. I'm not saying they're awesome parties, but i thought they were good enough.

Also, if you've never thrown an official event at Brown, you'd be surprised how much work/difficult it is.

There are lots of parties and, importantly, you'll find that alcohol enforcement is literally nil.

what characterizes that parties at brown?
by comparison, what are the parties at princeton/upenn/dartmouth like?
what exactly are room parties? Like, people all get together in one person's room? (how many people? doing what?)

idamayer, i get the impression that you don't know what booze is.

iwbb, they suck because you show up and you don't know anyone, and everyone's involved in their own little groups and no interaction takes place. maybe that's just my problem, though.

i definitely know what you're talking about, but that stems from the nature of having a party where you come in knowing virtually no one, and especially at lounge parties, where with the music and light levels, talking isnt exactly encouraged. Do you know anyone in the greek system? Because I know in addition to the big open parties in the lounge, the frats all have smaller basement parties, where, at least I feel, mingling, meeting people to just chat and meet new friends is more encouraged.

i've only been to a basement party at zete, and they're a little weird for me.

but yeah, i guess those parties aren't really there so much to meet new people as they are to just go with people you already know/run into people you know and dance. but maybe there should be events that better encourage conversation? though there are plenty of those...
conclusion: i suck

Brown parties are pretty great. The dorm restrictions are totally lax, and there are plenty of off campus houses. Its less in one place than those three (where everyone goes to the same parties and its impossible to miss them), but there are plenty of places to party. Brown is awesome.

^ total flame

slipper and amor, could you rephrase, i have no idea what either one of you is saying.

And yes amor, zete is wierd

watch out for drugged punch!

your third post ever is "watch out for drugged punch"?

haha, mgcsinc. thank you everyone for your reponses; i think i'm getting a pretty good idea of brown's party atmosphere. feel free to keep the answers coming.
