social life

Hi. I was wondering what the social life is like at uiuc.

Im from Cali where u need a car to get anywhere. Do you need a car to get around?

What stuff do ppl do normally at uiuc?

Also, how are the winters at uiuc? Iv never been around snow for more than three days.

they drink. alot. thats about all i ever hear

Having a car is a burden. Parking sucks and people will ask you to borrow the car everday.

If you need a car for the day, borrow it from a friend. :]

You can walk everywhere on campus.

With 30,000 undergrads, you can find every possible social scene imaginable with little difficulty. If you like to drink, you will find copious amounts of drinking buddies. If you don't, you will find people who also prefer not to drink.

The winters are cold and snowy

I cannot speak for the "normal" person at UIUC but for the Fraternity scene, guys usually drink one night of Monday-Wednesday and all three weekend nights Thursday-Saturday. Of course, this depends on class schedule, current workload, number of drinking tickets, and realization of deleterious effects of drinking so often.

As a rising junior (not yet 21), I am already at that stage where I don't drink as much as I once did.

hope this helps

The sort of social life you have largely depends on the type of people you hang out with at U of I. If you choose to join the Greek system, a lot of your social life involves parties/events organized by frats or sororities. People not in the Greek system who still like to drink and party usually head to the numerous bars and clubs near the campus. There are activities to do other than drinking though. There are clubs and cafes on campus that host bands pretty regularly. There are several big concerts/plays/musicals throughout the year as well. You can bowl or play pool at the Illini Union. And if you do have a car or happen to have friends who have a car on campus, then you can go to a movie theater or the shopping mall. If you happen to like playing computer/video games, there are plenty of hardcore gamers at U of I. There are also a ton of clubs/organizations you can join, which I definitely recommend if you're trying to find some people to identify with.

As for the winters, yeah, it's cold and it snows. Since you haven't been around snow much, you might kind of enjoy the novelty of it. But if you strictly like warm weather, it'll take some time for you to adjust to the midwestern climate.
