so whats the social life like at Rice?

Not Alot of "Hardcore" Partying... Theirs alot of clubs you can join that really bring fun to your stay at rice.

Everyone can find a social niche. There are plenty of parties/social gatherings across campus every weekend if that's your thing, and Club Fondren is open 24/7 to Rice students :). Most students fall between those two, and the cool thing is that there's (in my experience) been no pressure to conform to social activities that aren't your thing.

not a lot of hardcore partying? We have a holiday dedicated towards beer...and lots of other stuff...yeahh.....so i would say we've got some, yeah...

but emilia pretty much said it very week, whatever your wants are there is likely an organization or other people who will be interested in the same thing.

kunnel_25, if I were you, I wouldn't give advice or opinions on student life for school you don't attend. kthx.

are there a lot of racist people in houston, texas? lol...I want to transfer to rice..love the small size and the urban setting..and i hear it is strong in engineering.

Probably no more than in any other large city, racnna. It's not like Houston is some small town in east Texas. It's a pretty cosmopolitan place, and Rice is in a very affluent area.

Hm, I'm wondering if the question above is serious and, either way, why it is being asked on this thread rather than in a new one.

But to answer anyway:
I'd rank Houston's racism level about on par with any major US city. Yes, you can probably find some racial tension somewhere in the city, but for the average Rice student, it is entirely non existent. (fair warning, this is a statement coming from a white guy)

To answer the original question on this thread:
I'd agree with amelia for the most part. There is some "hardcore partying" on campus - each of the residential colleges throws a public party during the semester, to which every student at the university is invited. Most weekends, there are also smaller private parties (which can actually end up having a hundred or so guests) all around campus. You can also find a group of students relaxing watching a movie or just hanging out somewhere. There's also the city of Houston, which provides a lot of great off-campus options for entertainment.

The main thing is that, whatever your taste, you can probably find it going on somewhere at Rice.

Princeton Review ranks Rice as #1 for "class/race interaction." That should mean more than the racism of random people in Houston, a city of 4 million.

Warning: I'm about to repeat what most have already said!

Well, as someone who has lived in/around Houston almost my whole life, I can say with some assurance that I don't think anyone who attends Rice and/or lives in the neighboring areas will be affected by rascism. Houston is the fourth largest city in the US and has a very prevalent hispanic and black population (well, every culture/race really)... While encountering some silent resentment is possible, I wouldn't say that it is worse than any other huge city... The stereotype that Texas is full of rascist rednecks only comes true in far less populated and far more rural areas... ;)

PS: If you wear your RICE sweatshirt when your off-campus, you'll likely only encounter respect :)
