I know that any Ivy League school is rigorous but when I was on my campus tour, I felt that students have less fun here than at other schools. I don't want to rely on my single opinion so if anyone knows more about this, please help!!!

*I think your chances are good. You would, however, do well to raise that SAT score.

Oh, oops. After a while, you know, it just becomes mechanical**.

First, this thread is hilarious, albeit aided, naturally, by my belly-laugh inducing comments (see above). You "felt" that the students on campus had less fun than those on other campuses? When you go to school in NYC, the campus is for 1) sleeping 2) going to class 3) studying. So, yeah, don't put too much stock into those kids you saw on campus with upside-down smiles.

Hilariousness begins here
** Ibid., ends here

and for 4) being able to smell terrible smells.

Ivies are rigorous? Not really. The hardest part is getting in.

Students have less fun? These generalizations are totally useless. If you're a social person and like to have fun, you'll have fun. If you're antisocial, you'll be fine too. Don't worry about this nonsense.

its probably ur timing... wen i visited, the seniors were drinking on the library stairs...
haha, i still remember the drunk guy who passed by our tour group and yelled "come to Columbia and get drunk!"
so i obviously see them as more fun than u... it really depends on when u go... i got lucky to go when i went

the social life is going to be whatever you make of it, wherever you go. there will always be the people who study all the time and there will be people who like to enjoy themselves.

read the Life/Atmosphere threads in Skraylor's "Helpful Columbia Threads" thread stickied to the top of this forum.

seriously, i need to make this my autotext.

The best part of the social life here is that it is truly entirely up to you. There's never "THE place to be" in any given night and that, to me, is a blessing. I do anything from go to parties to go out to concerts/museums/etc to socialize in the dorms to go out and have coffee to wander downtown to whatever...there are tons of different people here and tons of different activities. The social life here is entirely self directed- met lots of people, get lots of phone numbers, inform yourself of what is going on, and you will have way more opportunities than you know what to do with!

Social Life? IT'S NEW YORK CITY BABY.

Well, many people here want to have fun, it's just hard to find crazy parties like the ones at big state schools. It's very easy to get into good clubs in NYC, though, if you know a couple of promoters. With that being said, you'll find plenty of social people here who like to party and have a good time. If you're not into frat or dorm parties, you can always hit up clubs. Don't let your college decision come down to whether or not Columbia is social enough... There are a few thousand undergrads here, at least a couple of them will be sociable, ;)

Columbia is the least campus oriented Ivy, so much of the fun occurs off of campus. Its up to you whether this is what you are looking for in a college experience. I personally prefer the "random fun" of a Brown or Dartmouth more than what I personally believe is a more intense urban-oriented scene at Columbia.
