Social Life

Wait, I thought philosophy was only a minor. Maybe I'm wrong. I'll go check, because I like philosophy.

that computer would be megahal, with various capital letters in it, and lives on pecker, a floor even I don't visit much. but yes, randomites are v. nice people, i've found, tho they don't strike everyone's fancy.

I am constantly amazed by how few people there are here with social skills. Don't misunderstand; many people are very nice. However, on the whole people are self-centered. Think about yourself for a second. You are probably self-centered, too, if you spent enough time on academics and extracurriculars to actually be accepted into MIT.

At MIT, everyone is like that. When you are done with your work and ready to go out, you won't have slacker friends you can call upon at any time of day. It just doesn't work that way. Make friends at BU or Harvard for that ^_~ Leaving "the bubble" is difficult, but not impossible. Afterall, Boston is a town of college students.. you should be able to find something to do.

I am in constant search of a good party. Three bits of advice:

1.) Choose your dorm wisely. Don't let i3 fool you. Don't live in New House (I made that mistake), Next House, Macgregor, or Simmons. Simmons tried to have a large unregistered party earlier this year and got in trouble, so I believe they're under probation. Baker has an occasional party (never been) as does Burton-Conner (esp. the Bombers). Bexley suprisingly does stuff and has a community unto itself.. however, EC and Senior have the most parties, I'd say. Random takes a certain type of person, and if that's you, that's great.

2.) Go Greek. I am so incredibly jealous of the frats. However, I happen to be female (gets you every time). I love my sisters, but I do wish the sorority system was more like the fraternities. Also, Greek life here is not as wild as other places.. it'll just get you normal people who enjoy the occasional (weekly, monthly.. depends) gathering. Note: I've never seen a keg despite going to many frat parties.

3.) Join a sport. If you choose correctly, you'll find that your team will want to celebrate victories. This is a good thing.

CPW is a lie. A huge lie. There are many lies in the admissions process (case in point: Arts at MIT.. you get an entire pamphlet on them, so you'd think they have some sort of presence or importance... that's a rant for later). You should believe just enough lies that you accept, come here, complain, and then help me fix this situation. MIT has great potential. There's 4,000 undergrads; you're bound to like at least 20 of them ^_~

All in all I like MIT. Really. I've never worked so hard in my life, and I've never been such a failure in my life. I never knew how much cooler I was than everyone else, as far as having social skills goes. But if you're willing to put in the effort, you'll find your place here. Not in no time. It took me more than a semester (I blame New House and lack of activities that gave me social contacts... caution: avoid clubs that are all grad students your first year). But friends and people to party with are two different things.

So yeah, totally, there's parties here ^_^ All the BU and Wellesley girls go to them, so it's got to be better than other things in the area.

In response to conwoman,

I, too, noticed that people looked more attractive on campus than usual over CPW. Perhaps it was seeing Joe-Nerd in sunlight for once. However, I have my suspicions that MIT hires models from NYC to act as students the same way they re-sod Kresge... just a thought. On the whole, MIT students are not good-looking, sorry :-/

in response to laureno...

i think you're right. i saw someone from my high school look half-decent who i know for a fact had shaggy hair for awhile during the year and (apparently) was trying to grow neck hair with a bunch of his friends.

but even if the guys did clean up for cpw... plenty weren't all that bad looking, really...

I have to attest the quality of the females at MIT, I was definitely surprised. For guys: don't believe anything people have told you about the male:female ratio or that MIT chicks are all gross...And even if you dont find that many girls from MIT all that attractive, the parties are filled with girls from Wellesley :)

Oh, right. Forgot to tell you guys, I'm actually a Columbia student hired by MIT to run around CPW looking pretty. And I did a damn fine job.

....

CPW may be an exaggeration (a big one at that), but is no lie. Most of the activities I attended were run by the students, not the administration. If anything, I find "party-goers" the dullest bunch to hang out with. But to each his own, and that's what I love most about the school - intelligence is the uniting factor among its students, not necessarily personality or even interest. Yet, everyone can find a niche - the party-goers, the anti-social nerds, the minds eternally trapped in high school, the sorority girls, the creative geniuses, the jocks, the artists....

You may not like me, but I can guarantee you'll find people you DO like.

lol, not all of CPW is a lie. Just the free food. Eat it while you can! ;)

If you attended classes, that definitely was not a lie :P

Oh, and booming music from every dorm on a Thursday is a lie. Unfortunately if you come here you'll have to get used to a music-less walk to class ;)

And the weather. BIG LIE. Man I wish the weather was like that year-round.

lol...yes i am a gooner? you follow football too?

"And the weather. BIG LIE. Man I wish the weather was like that year-round."

Hey, it's supposed to be 86 and sunny tomorrow! True story.

Anyway, I think the social life at MIT is what you want it to be. If you want to party every night, you can find a dorm/frat/ILG that will support you in that endeavor. If you want to be a shut-in, you can find places which will happily allow that too.

Embrace the duality of human nature. You can be a nerd and like to party.

Ouch, how is the weather going from freezing to sweltering in just a couple days?

Oh and I live in Texas so I wouldn't normally considering 86 degrees sweltering, but since the dorm has no airconditioning.... it is. Oh, I live on the top floor :(

Yeah, I do too... the 15th floor of MacGregor is no fun when it's 85 degrees outside.

But, seriously, it was SNOWING last Tuesday. And today it is going to be 86. ***?

Haha definitely. I fried today. Luckily the forecasts now predict temperatures of upper 50s to low 60s.
