Social life

I know that Brown has a reputation for being an “out there” school, but I was wondering about the more … traditional college social calendar is like. I know the Greek system isn’t huge, so is the scene not frat parties? do people mostly go downtown? Like, what do people actually do on weekends … the only reason I didn’t apply to William&Mary early was because the social scene was dead (the only thing they do on Halloween is watch a capella ? )

I’m really happy that I got in and all, but I’m starting to get a little nervous that Brown isn’t going to offer exactly what I’m looking for in a college experience.

Basically, what do the normal kids do for fun?

Thanks

what are you looking for?

despite being only 11 or 12% of the population, Greek life is without a doubt the strongest presence for the weekend social scene at Brown, especially for freshman and sophomores. If you know athletes, teams often throw parties. If you have an ID, during the week the scene is at several bars very close to campus (Liquid Lounge, Spats, FishCo). When you're 21, everyone goes to the GCB, the bar in the bottom of grad center that requires an annual membership but has ridiculously cheap prices. They are very strict there, so practically no one under 21 is spotted there. There is a new up and comer in the bar/restaurant near FishCo called Kurrents. They offer good deals to student groups looking to host parties and they are notoriously lax about carding.

There is of course the non alcoholic scene of plays, acapella shows, dance/comedy group performances, First Friday (which is this new effort by the university to hold dry events the first friday of every month) we also have a new thing this year called "The Late Night Fund" where groups can get absurd sponsorships for throwing dry events that go until after midnight on friday or saturday nights.

In other words, there is a lot to do here. I definitely haven't covered all the things I've done on weekends.

From what I know, Brown has something for everyone

i heard the greek system sucks at brown though lol

ok whatever thanks guys

Psh, the Greek System isn't that bad. :P All the frats and sororities are known for different things, though. shrug Personally, I've had the most experience with Zeta Delta Xi (Zete). I'm joining it this upcoming year, in fact! It's a pretty great place. Anyway, there's a spot/activity for everyone, be it clubbing at a bar, drinking at a party, indulging in other things too raunchy to post here, blah blah. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine! No worries.
