i was admitted to dartmouth and attended dimensions. i had fun (but not as an amazing time as everyone else...probably because i was getting sick and looking for reasons not to like dartmouth). academically, i'm sure dartmouth is great for my interests, but as a city kid i'm worried about the social life. my other choice is columbia, but i sort of want to get out of the city.

my thoughts on the social scene: beer pong is fun (especially the real version) and i like going to parties/don't mind drinking (but don't aim to black out/throw up). do current students ever feel like the frat scene gets to be too repetitive? are there theme parties to break things up?

Chances are that you will live your working life in a major metropolitan area. This is an opportunity to experience something different- at least for a while.
My son grew up in a major city, was something of a hipster, and was behind establishing “Friday Night Rock” at Dartmouth. He grew to love the opportunities to get on college radio and to see moose, cruising the Upper Valley with his girlfriend by car (he didn’t drive himself).
There is plenty of time to experience San Francisco (where he interned one summer) or NY (where he lives and works now).
He also became quite adept at pong, and regarded what went on at other colleges he visited as pale versions of the real deal.

Man, hard call. I would pick Columbia, though, I think. Yeah, you do have the rest of your life to live in a metropolitan area, but I can’t even imagine how amazing it would to live the BEST years of your life in arguably the most vibrant city in the world…especially compared to Hanover. That said, the academics are somewhat different so weigh your options well.

Are there theme parties? Hell yes…beach party…frat is turned into a beach, there are two of these every winter, jungle party, preppy party, tackies (wear flair), white out, highlighter party, derby (kentucky derby), masquerade, eurotrash, gatsby, rave…these are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

And, um, what do you mean the “real” version…there is only one real version :)
