<p>Do employers look at these before hiring candidates? It just worries me they could get a negative impression if one's friend on facebook has a picture of him/herself at a party holding a beer bottle.</p>

<p>It depends on the job. Many empolyers look at it, some care more than others. But I doubt having a friend with a picture of him/herslef holding a beer bottle will hurt your chances. Everyone knows that mere acquaintances can be facebook friends. As long as you are not the one with a beer bottle or any other type of inappropriate gesture (eg.: Ms. New Jersey), then you should have no problems.</p>
<p>I hear there is a increase of this kind of activity, so better safe than sorry</p>
<p>They check. I know this for a fact. Fix your profile settings on facebook so only friends can access your pictures.</p>
