Why destroy something that could bring you an endless bounty of benefits? (college activities, study groups, more sociable, ease of communication, etc.)

You don’t need it. I have a FB to meet mew people and occasionally communicate with one of my old Army friends. In 50 years when your kids find out about FB, they’ll be like “oh my god, was there indoor plumbing then?” and you can be like “yes and no… but I had a FB myself!” they will think you’re the most lame dad ever, and that’s priceless

As Johnson said, half of the parties and shows I go to I find out about through facebook. It’s great for keeping up with what’s going on around campus.

One has to go through a huge process to delete one’s facebook nowadays, so most people just deactivate it and are able to come back to it and reactivate it later. I do this a few days before a paper is due to prevent me from getting distracted.

I go through every couple of weeks and delete people that I don’t talk to fairly regularly. If there is not some kind of relationship I don’t stay in contact with people, and I VERY rarely add people I don’t know in person-- I have a couple of online friends I’ve had for years and everyone else is family and schoolmates. Friending hundreds of people you don’t know is unnecessary and I don’t see much benefit, but it is certainly useful for keeping up with groups on campus and people you don’t see every day. I also think it’s a valuable tool for putting together study groups.

In my opinion Facebook is super helpful with making plans and staying connected. There’s the events feature, helpful for parties, and I find Facebook chat is one of the easiest ways to make plans for the night with your friends. (Assuming your friends are constantly on Facebook like mine are, lol.) You can also keep in touch with high school friends or people who live far away. You can even find out the names of cute girls or guys you’ve seen around/met at parties I think Facebook is almost invaluable for college, but that’s just me.

I Love FB! If I really don’t wanna hear someone’s mom writing a comment on someone, I hide the friend, so I don’t insult them by defriending them. But I really need it to connect with my closest family and friends.

isn’t that what email, telephones and the United States Postal service is for?

Sure, because I know I’m willing to spend at least 50 x 44 cents ($22) a week just to send people information by USPS.
/sarcasm

Sure, email and telephones work too. But there’s a clear line for the kind of thing appropriate for email vs facebook. And sometimes people just can’t talk right that instant on a phone. (Although I’ll be the first to admit that I think facebook’s plan for facebook email is serious overkill. I may use facebook a lot, but as I said there is a legit need for separate email).
