Social Networking Question (facebook)

Does anyone else feel like there is truly not a need for a social network such as Facebook in their lives?

Do any of you not have some sort of social network?

Should I delete mine? I have a TON of people I don't know and I find it pointless but I can't help but think that I may need it for college?

What are your opinions?

Half of the events I go to (for college activities, parties, whatever) I only know of because of facebook.

That there is it’s real value.

(That and who doesn’t like facebook stalking people?)

Why destroy something that could bring you an endless bounty of benefits? (college activities, study groups, more sociable, ease of communication, etc.)

You don’t need it. I have a FB to meet mew people and occasionally communicate with one of my old Army friends. In 50 years when your kids find out about FB, they’ll be like “oh my god, was there indoor plumbing then?” and you can be like “yes and no… but I had a FB myself!” they will think you’re the most lame dad ever, and that’s priceless

As Johnson said, half of the parties and shows I go to I find out about through facebook. It’s great for keeping up with what’s going on around campus.

One has to go through a huge process to delete one’s facebook nowadays, so most people just deactivate it and are able to come back to it and reactivate it later. I do this a few days before a paper is due to prevent me from getting distracted.

That’s all true.

I will most likely deactivate and see how that goes.

You do not need to go through a huge process to delete it… you just have to wait 14 days.

How would you recieve news of events via facebook? How did people find out 5 years ago?

^Hell if I know.
I still don’t get how people functioned without cell phones.

And what do you mean “how would you receive news of events”? It’s facebook. You can create events and invite people. Voila.

I only have 6 friends in my FB… I don’t have a cell phone, but I might get a tracfone for emercencies and texting.

I go through every couple of weeks and delete people that I don’t talk to fairly regularly. If there is not some kind of relationship I don’t stay in contact with people, and I VERY rarely add people I don’t know in person-- I have a couple of online friends I’ve had for years and everyone else is family and schoolmates. Friending hundreds of people you don’t know is unnecessary and I don’t see much benefit, but it is certainly useful for keeping up with groups on campus and people you don’t see every day. I also think it’s a valuable tool for putting together study groups.

I also delete people. I’ve seen people with 3000 friends

I hope Osama Bin Laden changes his name to Osama bin facebook… do you know that Facebook finances 92% of all terrorism?

^ Lolwut???

In my opinion Facebook is super helpful with making plans and staying connected. There’s the events feature, helpful for parties, and I find Facebook chat is one of the easiest ways to make plans for the night with your friends. (Assuming your friends are constantly on Facebook like mine are, lol.) You can also keep in touch with high school friends or people who live far away. You can even find out the names of cute girls or guys you’ve seen around/met at parties  I think Facebook is almost invaluable for college, but that’s just me.

I Love FB! If I really don’t wanna hear someone’s mom writing a comment on someone, I hide the friend, so I don’t insult them by defriending them. But I really need it to connect with my closest family and friends.

I’ve been adding people who go to my university for weeks. None of them checks FB more than once in two weeks.

isn’t that what email, telephones and the United States Postal service is for?

Sure, because I know I’m willing to spend at least 50 x 44 cents ($22) a week just to send people information by USPS.
/sarcasm

Sure, email and telephones work too. But there’s a clear line for the kind of thing appropriate for email vs facebook. And sometimes people just can’t talk right that instant on a phone. (Although I’ll be the first to admit that I think facebook’s plan for facebook email is serious overkill. I may use facebook a lot, but as I said there is a legit need for separate email).

you cant quantify the social experience that facebook gives, just take it in and enjoy it.

Yes, one can subjectively qualify it and in my opinion, one can get by without FB and even without the internet just fine.
