social networking sites??

what social networking sites does everyone use? I personally don't like facebook and was looking for some alternatives, so does anyone use or know of anything else??

Everyone uses Facebook. I haven't heard of anything else, and I don't think anyone uses Myspace.

Seriously, everyone at college uses facebook.

Go with facebook. At USC, that really is the main site for everything. Also, you'll drive your new roommate crazy if you don't have a profile! :)

yeah i've thought about making a facebook but I don't want to join because my parent have profiles LOL... doesnt anyone else think thats weird?? I'd rather join a social networking site that only lets college students join, kinda like the old facebook...

They can't see your profile unless you allow it.

so am I supposed to reject my parents' friend requests? haha I know there are privacy settings but I still would rather be a part of a diff. site that was meant ONLY for college students.

Facebook was originally designed for college students who had .edu email addresses... as soon as it was opened to high school students and then the general public that I have had second thoughts about joining..

at the end of the day I wish we could all come together and join a site that was a social networking site specifically designed for college use only

Everyone uses facebook.

EVERYONE!!!!

"Facebook was originally designed for college students who had .edu email addresses..."

If you want to delve into facebook's history, it was originally designed for Harvard and Boston-area colleges.

I'd facepalm if my parents ever friend requested me on facebook. I never added my brother, as we have a healthy respect for each other's private lives.

I agree that a lot of people use facebook, but I remember a time when everyone used myspace and nobody had heard of facebook and look what happened...

I guess I just really like the concept of joining a social networking site that is geared towards college students. I feel like myspace has become too mainstream and isn't as useful for college students as it should be

If anyone has heard of any alternatives, regardless of whether "everyone is on facebook", please let me know... I'll be searching for some too so I'll let everyone who is interested know about it

Seriously, just use facebook. Get over the fact that everyone else uses it. It really is the best way to keep in contact with friends from high school, college, and elsewhere.

Facebook....

Parents making "friend" requests with their children on Facebook? As a parent I find that creepy....

I agree with Groovy. In fact, this new poster sounds a little like a previous first time poster (or new identity for old poster) who seemed to be viral marketing for a competitor service to FaceBook. Not saying that's the case, but if it is--I think we may be being punked.

I agree. Ironic that while the OP's main goal is to network, he/she is in search of a website that is used less than Facebook at USC. -_-

I'm just looking for a web site that has a better reason to join than just "everyone's on facebook"

there was a time when myspace ruled and nobody was on facebook, but people joined because it was in fact more suited to the needs of a typical college student than myspace

ultimately I only want to network with college students, not a 50 year old librarian from austria

... sry if I'm not so willing to simply just join the masses and "turn up my privacy settings"

Ok dude I don't think you're getting the point. Yeah granted facebook has been joined by a lot of non college people, but for the most part it still is mainly a college networking site. In fact, the whole site is basically geared for college networking. There is a USC class of 2012 group with nearly 2000 members. There are groups for people in different USC housing. There are applications geared to college things and all that. Your argument that just because the masses are using it doesn't make sense. You know why the masses are using it? Because it's the best college networking site, think it through a little bit. Why would anyone use anything else when facebook is the easiest and best way to network in college?

The fact is facebook is the best college networking site with the most people on it right now.

You won't have to network with "a 50 year old librarian from austria" if you don't accept their friend requests and you set your privacy settings. In fact, this "50 year old librarian from austria" won't even be able to see your profile unless they are in the USC network...as for your parents, you can either reject their request (and explain it to them) or add them to the limited profile restrictions...

excited4college2, are you going to USC? I see you have posted on the UCSB site claiming you are new to that school. What exactly does your question have to do with USC? Or are you trolling?

I'm going to ucsb next yr but I'm in in la for the summer doing an internship and taking a summer course at usc.. my question doesn't really have anything to do with usc but I just wanted to see what others students thought about other sns..
