Social / Night life at F&M?

What is the social scene and night life like at F&M? Are there events or parties for students to go to?

As a parent who watched the process I would say the school is unsure if they want there to be night life at F&M. They do have a policy that is sporadically and unevenly enforced (apparently at the discretion of the person responsible for that particular dorm) for drinking in the rooms. They have a system whereby students can anonymously rat out other kids via a program on their iPhone and campus security will show up. If you get caught then it is like a prep school where they put you on warning and then if it happens again then you are suspended for the semester (partial refund). You have to write a letter asking to come back. Seniors party at the fraternities but the freshman are treated like they are in prep school and can’t drink or smoke or do anything…but as I mentioned it is sporadically and unevenly enforced

As a current student I can say that most of what’s above is not entirely true. F&M uses a three strike system. If you get caught violating the “rules” three times, then you are suspended for a semester and must petition to come back. However, are some offenses worth more than one strike. As for fraternities, the college instituted a policy that once a month each fraternity must have outside security. Outside security checks ids and gives one wristband to over 21 and a different one to under. If roaming security sees you drinking with an under 21 wristband then you’re escorted out of the party. It’s only one night a month so it’s really nothing. There are also apartment parties that aren’t as regulated by the school.

My daughter’s a sophomore there now. From what I gather there are a lot of parties for those who want to find them. There’s a system for anonymously calling for help (P Safe, I think it’s called?) so you can get medical/whatever help for someone without getting in trouble with either friends or administration. The way she described it, it makes a lot of sense, actually.

I know she manages to find a lot of parties with her sorority and her sports team, not sure where else but she finds them easily. As long as she keeps her grades up and doesn’t do anything stupid, I’m just glad she’s happy.

She says the school’s motto should be “work hard, play hard.” Intense academics, and people who know how to have fun when they’re not studying.
