Hello! I will be attending American University in the Fall of 2017 (I was accepted this year but decided to take a gap year first) and I’m just wondering what the social scene is like not only at AU, but in DC as a whole for college students? because during my visit I didn’t get a
proper feeing for it. Do students from AU, GW, and G’town hang out or party together? What are common weekend activities in DC? What is AU’s reputation in DC compared to the other colleges in the area? Are there any AU organizations that really dominate the social scene (frats, sororities, etc)? Thanks!
I’m a current AU student and I actually think the social scene is pretty good. While there’s not a ton of social interaction between the 3 schools, I know plenty of people who go to Gtown and GW parties and whatnot regularly, and who spend time with friends at the other schools. I’ve gone out to a few Gtown and a few GW parties so there is some interaction in that sense. While Greek life has a pretty big presence and throw a good portion of the parties, the parties are pretty open at the beginning of the year, the sports teams often have houses and throw parties, and its most certainly not hard to have fun if you aren’t involved in Greek life because it doesn’t dominate the campus to the point of saturation. AU doesn’t really have a reputation for being a party school, but neither do the other DC schools. I’ve found that if you want to go out or party around campus, it’s fairly easy to find it. Lots of students go clubbing on the weekends, especially at a few different clubs that are 18+ or offer 18+ nights, and there’s always night monumenting or going out to events downtown that students go to often. Hope this is helpful!
This was very helpful! Thank you!
