I am an international student living in Switzerland and will be applying to BU ED. I really love this school and Boston but was wondering how the social scene is outside of the academics. Alcohol in Europe isn’t treated as a big deal and the drinking age here is 16 and it has shaped how high school students socially are here. I have heard that BU isn’t much of a party school, but I don’t mind this as long as there are at least some parties to attend occasionally. I’ve read that Boston is becoming very strict on frats and partying and am therefore curious as to what college students do in terms of partying. Do they go to house parties if you are under 21? I am aware of BU students going to nightclubs as upperclassmen but don’t know what they do before they reach 21. Can someone please explain to me how it functions in Boston? Thanks :)

I don’t see any responses, so I will reply. You might want to look at the previous threads on this topic, as I know that I have seen this question addressed before. I’m a parent, but the common thread that I have seen is that Boston has so many other off campus choices that students are less likely to pick drinking and partying as the best option. There are plenty of off campus parties (within frats/sororities and outside that network) if that’s your choice. DD would say that many fresh students start with that end in mind, and some continue. Many others decide to do other things that they find more fun as the possibilities are literally endless. She has gone to Canada, NYC, Vermont, Cape Cod, various hiking spots, Chicago, kayaking, sailing, museums, concerts, fun runs… My college (back in the dinosaur ages) was more isolated, and all we did on Saturdays was drink as there were very limited options. My understanding from talking to other students who graduated with her is that dynamic hasn’t changed much. Isolated school = more on campus activities and drinking. Urban school = less drinking, more outside activities.

BU is not much of a party school…it’s a modern campus where people mostly go out to explore the city and visit new spots. If you want a school that is in the city but has parties, u should do USC. there are tons of frat and greek parties

Thank you for the reply guys I’m picking BU because of the limitless possibilities that are available for a student. I just want to make sure that partying was not non existent because I’ve seen quite a few posts saying that its almost unheard of at BU.

Parties are definitely not non-existent at BU, if you want them you can certainly find them (Allston crawls and MIT frat parties) but at the same time it’s absolutely not required to have a good time
