So I was waitlisted at UCSB, my dream school, but I’m looking into cal poly and sdsu. I’m visiting poly this weekend, but I’m concerned about the social scene and entertainment in general.
I am definitely a work hard play hard type of person and am looking forward to a good party scene at the college I will attend. Does cal poly have parties to go to every weekend? How good are the parties there? And also will the small town get boring after my first year or two?
Please let me know.
Also, I plan on joining a fraternity.
I can’t speak for the party scene proper (i.e. house parties and what not), but the downtown is BOOMING on the weekends. It is a very vibrant and a lot going on … music, events, drinks, etc. I think it’d be really hard to get bored of SLO if you enjoy going out.
From what I’ve heard, there’s no shortage of parties, but I can’t really attest to that personally but I’d be absolutely shocked if that wasn’t the case.
Cal Poly Senior here and yes there are parties every weekend. Yes we do rage all the time namely because there’s nothing else in the town to do.
Weekends here start on Thursdays. Most people stop going to house parties though by the time they’re 21 because downtown bars are just so much better
That’s good to know! Besides the partying does the town in general get boring after a while? I’m visiting right now, and I can kind of see that to be the case.
Well, to be honest, any college town that isn’t in a major city like LA or SF will get boring after a while, assuming you aren’t into nature/hiking/wilderness. I see it as a bonus because it is much easier to meet other Cal Poly students rather than say if they were dispersed out into a major city every weekend. It’s always an unique feeling running into a lab partner at a frat party or hooking up with your TA downtown, but I also definitely make a lot of my friends in my classes by sharing a drink with them because I’d be too awkward to meet them otherwise.
Do I personally get bored? Never. Whether it is drowning in school work Monday-Friday or drinking away my pain on the weekends with my favorite people, I’m always occupied with recognizable faces and uncharted situations.
Really appreciate the feedback, thank you!
