I'm looking at CMU, mainly at SCS. However, I don't consider myself a "nerd". As someone who goes to parties every weekend in HS, will I be able to enjoy the 'college experience' at CMU?

I don't doubt the quality of CMU's academics, but from what I've heard, it's not considered a 'fun' school.

Any attendees care to shed some light on this issue?

you can definitely party here, but it in no way compares to most colleges in terms of letting loose. also, even though pitt is right next door, i don’t know of any cmu students who make it their place to party…remember, pittsburgh is freezing in the winter, so even a fifteen minute venture turns into hell. most people would rather stay as close to campus as possible, espescially during freshman year.

ikari, there are many different “crowds” at cmu with many different kinds of students. You would be best served to do what I did and make friends across disciplines. Fortunately, engineering can be great for that because you do a lot of collaborative work with other majors. The best thing to do is try to move through social circles in other colleges at the school–design people, scs people, engineers, they tend to stick together–you have to diversify :)

Also–if you are not in drama I wouldn’t bet on running into many students that are. It tends to be a self-isolating environment at the school, largely because of the odd hours and the demanding work. The classes are small and the students have their own culture within the university, with its own traditions and social circles. I think I met…one drama student my entire time there that I somewhat befriended through a language course I took, but the most part the social circles tended to be far apart because of the odd hours of their coursework.

lhluers you posted a while ago but I can go into specifics.

There is Half Off in Oakland, about 20 minute walk from campus…but in the winter it’s deadly cold and if you have a friend with a car you’ll want a ride. All of the restaurants in the area will serve meals for half price! In Pittsburgh food is cheap, so you can get a great burger and fries for like 3 dollars. Make sure to try out Fuel and Fuddle, but show up at around 10:30, by 11pm (when Half Off begins) the lines are so long you most likely won’t get in. If you are into sports there are plenty of gaming events, a nearby sports center has a climbing wall, there is skiing about an hours drive away, paintball range…you basically have to look around. If you like crepes, I would also recommend heading to Shadyside on the weekdays before 3pm. There is a great little shop up there.

I’ve probably said too much as it is… There is plenty of stuff to do.
