Social Scene at Dartmouth?

Hey guys just a bunch of questions. Sorry its so many- Thanks for the help.

Are parties in mostly frats? Do they get big and crowded? Are they ever broken up?

Do people go to bars or anything? Is most of the drinking on campus?

Do frats ever have small parties? Do people drink much in the dorms?

How many days of the week does the average dartmouth kid go out? and what days of the week/weekend?

What fun things do kids do on the weekend that do NOT involve drinking?
Isn't there a ski mountain near Dartmouth?

Thanks!

Alright so I’ll answer your questions as best I can.

Most parties occur in frats, yes, though room parties do happen. It depends on when and where you go. The really big parties tend to get crowded though. Parties are pretty much never broken up. S&S (safety and Security) will come though and look around from time to time, but they won’t break it up.

I’m sure some people (legal age) go to bars, though there aren’t really many around campus. We did just get a new pub in town though, so that might attract some people.

Frats have events quite a bit, or if you just want to go hang out, you usually can do that about whenever. If you’re a member of a frat, of course, there are some brothers only events that would be smaller.

Average is really hard to say… there’s some kids that’ll go out 5 nights of the week. I’d say the most common student would go out on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday though. That is if they decide to go out.

There’s tons of stuff! I’m actually a non-drinker at D and I enjoy myself quite a bit (and enjoy going to the frats and not drinking too). If you elaborate on interests I can give more info on specific things on campus you might be interested in.

As far as the ski mountain, Dartmouth actually owns its own! The Dartmouth skiway is just a short ride from campus, and has very affordable prices for students. In addition, the DOC (Dartmouth Outing Club) always has tons of outdoors activities going on for outdoorsy stuff.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask (or pm me)

In addition to the Skiway, there are several pretty sweet places to ski within 60-90 minutes. Find somebody with a car and go. Avoid the name brand resort locales (Stratton, Okemo, Killington, etc) and hit up some of the smaller places with way more character, sweeter terrain, and much lower prices. You’re basically in the heart of New England skiing, with access to the whites and greens.

I’d say people exaggerate how much they go out. Sure, there are people who go out 5-7 nights a week. But I’d say the average student goes out twice a week out of WFSat. I know a lot of people who stay in on F or Sat just to catch up with friends, catch up on sleep, or just relax from a high-energy week. Also, people tend to go out less as you get older. The frat scene is very much dominated by underclassmen on nights where there are a lot of people out.

Okay thanks a lot guys…

I’m interested in sports (like really every sport), concerts, cooking, among other things. Um what else…I like movies? Is there a theater near by Dartmouth?

yes, there is a movie theatre right in town (which is literally once you step off campus.

^ Actually from what I heard from a friend a D-mouth, drinking parties happen pretty muh everyday. If not, at least once a week on every floor in the dorms. Even my friend, who I thought would never ever start drinking, started to (cuz of pong games)… But really, with Dartmouth’s like 60% of student body in frats, if partying (and drinking) is not for you, I don’t think you should consider Dartmouth at all…

smarts1 has obviously never been to dartmouth. Sure, you could drink everyday, but people just don’t do that. At least once a week on every floor in the dorms…yeah, freshman tend to pregame a lot, but only the ones who are so excited by the novelty of being able to… people get over themselves after freshman fall. I’ve certainly been to some epic room parties, and they were awesome, but the reason they were so fun is because they were the exception, not the rule. Although I myself drink, I have many friends, affiliated and unaffiliated, who choose not to, and its so not a big deal for them to be non drinkers at. Being affiliated does not imply drinking…pong can be played with anything (including food…cookie pong, yum). And partying and drinking also don’t go hand in hand…I actually tend to drink more when I’m not partying, because I’m playing pong. When i’m at a party, sure I’ll drink, or have been to tails (a sort of drink good alcohol before an open party event), but at parties, i’m more likely to dance, and mingle, and listen to the band (there are frequently bands playing…either friday night rock, which brings bands to campus, programming board which plans events alternative events to those sponsored by frats, or at frats and sororities themselves.) And not only is there a super cheap movie theater in town, but the Dartmouth film society also shows movies…usually whatever the big releases were from the term before, so, last week, for example, they showed Avatar and Nine.

I tend to go out some mondays, every wednesday, I often drink or hang out at my house on thursdays but don’t “rage” and then fridays or saturdays, but if I have a lot of work, or I’m sick or tired, I might stay in and do work, or sleep, or watch a movie with friends instead.

I second the notion of green. It is pretty obvious that smarts has never been to campus. I is a huge overstatement to say drinking happens at least once a week on every floor in every dorm (especially if you take drinking to mean getting wasted). Also, green is correct that at most places you can play pong with whatever you want, there is always the old water standby. I can say, again as a non-drinker myself, that you can tons of fun here not drinking, and find many likeminded people.

As far as movies we have the nugget theater in town, which shows current movies, and as green mentioned, the D film society. What’s really great about the D film society is you can pay about $15 at the beginning of the term for a film pass, and get admission to something in the range of 30 movies. The film society shows both releases set off by a term or so, and older classic movies. For example, on Halloween they always have a late night showing of 3 or 4 scary movies, both classic and contemporary.

Between the intramural, club, and varsity level sports there’s always a sporting event to be involved in or watch, and, for concerts,as green mentioned, we have friday night rock, and several frat sponsored concerts. The new pub in town has also talked about bringing in some talent from boston to play.

sounds good. I dont believe smarts so its all good. thanks a lot guys
