Hi, I'm an accepted student at Gettysburg and it's a school I'm really considering. The only concern I have though is the social scene. I don't drink (bad family history with alcohol) and I'm not a big partier. I've heard that gettysburgs frats are really important to the social scene at the school and I was wondering if I would be out of place and not enjoy the school as a kid who would not join a frat/doesn't drink

Honestly I was accepted it was my first choice 2 years ago but my last visit was really marred by the drinking. It was an open house about a thousand people there and the frats were set up across the street drinking on the front lawns of homes with signs “honk and we drink”. Really a bad example set for the school and it sealed it for me that I would be way out of place as a Midwestern student that doesn’t drink among a group of predominantly east coast frat boys. Fine for some just not for me.

Drinking and frats are unfortunately very big at Gettysburg. Not all students are involved in the Greek scene, but a large percentage do. There are other schools with a smaller Greek scene but I think you will find drinking to take place at almost all colleges. I think you could probably find like minded students who aren’t interested in drinking but I also believe your initial impressions are pretty spot on. Best of luck to you!
