Social scene at UVA

I was just wondering if any one could provide insight into the social scene at UVA. Is it really jocky? Is it a bunch of stuck up rich white snobs? Is there tension between different groups? Are people study freaks or laid back? etc.

It's very eclectic.

Please elaborate.

so its diverse, and has great interaction between groups? or is it simply just a collection of various groups that don't interact often?

also, is the whole scene overwhelming at all, with the amount of students there?

i heard a bunch of hot girls?

confirmed?

bingo, yes, I will confirm what you've heard. Many, many attractive females are here at UVA ;) . Social life here is very, very good, to say the least. UVA students tend to be very involved in the myriad clubs, intramural teams, groups, volunteer activities, etc that are available. The students seem to have diverse interests and are energetic in pursuing them. There's room for just about every kind of person here, and there's no tension between any of the various groups on grounds.

I don't see how you can say there is no tension between the various groups on grounds in light of the racial attacks that have been going on here in the past few years.

i heard theres a lot of indian people there. is it true?

wahoo, those were moral infractions perpetrated by individuals, not by groups. In general, 99% of people from any given group have no animosity or contempt for those of another group. Yes, the incidents that took place have shocked the student body, but they are in no way representative of the general conscience of the student population.

Agreed cavalier302

If you want to hang with rich white snobs, you can hang with rich white snobs. If you want to hang with jocks, you'll have to work, but you can.

If you want to hang with cool people. . . its pretty easy too.

ANd if you like wierdos, just find someone in brown college :D

I think that's how it is just about everywhere, dave...

I think that racial tension is a serious issue at the university, there were 5 attacks the first 7 days of school, and then another two following those. Racial incidents are reoccurring at uva, and these were not the first racially movtivated attacks. And stating things like 99% people do not tolerant racism, does not make it okay. If the student body felt so strongly about this issue, there would more talk about placing it in the honor code. Anyway besides that, I think the social scene is pretty good, but it is segregated.

Alabama in the '60's was racial tension. A few isolated events (some of which aren't even believed to have been perpetrated by UVA students) do not mean there is tension between races. Of course that doesn't make those incidents OK, but to say that those incidents are representative of a larger tension among different groups is not true.

Saying that the social scene is segregated is somewhat true, but I think it's true at any school. People with similar from similar backgrounds who have similar interests tend to group together. That being said, no party or event I've been to has been exclusively white, black, asian, or any other race. I've been to events and parties held by many different groups and have never felt threatened or out-of-place, and I don't think anyone really does. As I've said before, 99+% of students here are very welcoming and accepting of all sorts of people. That's how it is at most schools.

Truth be told, I don't like where this thread is going because I don't think that racial tension is something that I'd include when talking about student life at UVA. There are a lot of prospective applicants on this message board and they shouldn't be getting a distorted impression of a great school.

I didn't say anywhere that "those incidents are representative of a larger tension among different groups". I'm just saying that statements such as 99% of students don't support racism, makes it seem like its not a big deal bc you can't change everyone. And I was wondering do you know all 13,000+ students in uva personally? Bc thats the only way you could make the statement, "99+% of students here are very welcoming and accepting of all sorts of people."

I would argue that there is tension between races, just look at some of the comments Rick Turner, the dean of african-american affairs, has made. Just yesterday the University named the first ever Chief Diversity Officer. Were there no problems or tensions there would be no need for a position like that. Read some of the guest opinions in the Cav Daily from some of the african-american groups, they feel as if they are not being treated fairly in the greek system and by university police to name a few. I agree with the point the Micky made about how there has been little useful student body reaction. Yes, a lot of people wore black shirts the monday after one of the events happened, but no lasting action has been taken.

Just my 2 cents.

is the tension geared mostly towards African-Americans, or all races?

there has been a lot of stuff in our local news lately (I am from Northern VA). I am Pakistani-American, and UVA had always been one of my top 5 schools, but these incidents are making me look at Princton, Stanford and Yale a lot more closely than UVA.

These recent racial incidents have been aimed toward the African American students.

To clarify, the "incidents" were an uncorroborated and unproven accusation by a student council candidate who was not likely to win who then manipulated the "incident" into becoming unchallenged for office, and also graffiti painted over other graffiti that was originally painted by african american groups. Beta bridge is continuosly repainted, often after only hours. Yes it was tasteless but there has been much overreaction.

ok, well deviating from the topic of racial tension i would like to ask the question of academic atmosphere at uva. are students highly competitive with each other? is there a "cut-throat" environment? Do people value studying long hours over relaxing? things of this nature. any comments appreciated.
