Social Scene at Wake?

Are there dorm parties?
Do people go to bars?
Are they mostly frat parties?

Do people get written up for alcohol offenses (or is it only if you like go to the hospital)?

Are frats on campus?
Do you ever have to take a cab or car anywhere?

What do kids do socially if they don't drink? (jw not saying im one)

Are there dorm parties?

Not in freshmen dorms. You will learn to love and appreciate this, I promise.

Do people go to bars?

Yes. Lots of fraternities/sororities have parties at bars, and people 21+ go to bars on Thursday nights. You can be under 21 to go into the bars, but you won’t be able to drink at the bar (obviously). But the bars are always really fun because there’s lots of music and dancing and whatnot.

Are they mostly frat parties?

Yes, most parties are frat parties, but Wake isn’t exclusively frat parties. As aforementioned, sports houses have parties, too. If your friends have off campus houses they’ll probably party there, too.

Do people get written up for alcohol offenses (or is it only if you like go to the hospital)?

I answered that before, but I actually don’t think (/don’t know really but don’t think) that you get written up if you go to the hospital. I know you don’t if your friends bring you to Student Health. I think Wake discourages writing up people who drank too much because then people would be afraid to get help for them, and they don’t want that at all.

Are frats on campus?

All frats have lounges on campus except DKEs and Sig Ep, although DKEs has a house that is practically on campus. All frats also have off campus houses, though.

Do you ever have to take a cab or car anywhere?

To basketball games. They normally run shuttles to the big basketball games, but you need a ride for others. This is seriously never an issue because so many people go to these games. Otherwise, you only really need a car if you’re doing community service in Winston or something. Very few of my friends have cars, and the ones who do hardly even use them.

What do kids do socially if they don’t drink? (jw not saying im one)

Wake holds a LOT of things on campus. We have a LOOOOT of speakers come in (we’re having Spike Lee tonight! We also had Thomas Friedman come in – I went to that one and it was awesome. Maya Angelou teaches here and she’s spoken before … a lotttt of people come here and the speeches are really interesting). Student Union hosts concerts on the quad or in Wait Chapel. We had an orchestra come in once (I went to that; it was a great concert) and we had Eric Hutchinson and Jon McLaughlin come and they both had good turn outs. We’re having Ben Harper come soon and everyone is excited about that. We haveeee aWake All Night and Wake 'N Shake which benefit the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research fund. I went to Wake 'N Shake. Both are really fun and they’re for good causes. Lots of Greek people and non-Greeks alike go to them.

If you’re involved in a club, you’ll probably be busy with that, too. On my hall, the boys formed intramural teams for each sport and they had practices and even made it to one of the intramural “finals”. Screamin’ Demons hosted an event in one of our academic buildings with TONNNS of food and they played our Wake vs. Texas game in there.

Even if you drink, it’s still fun to participate soberly in these events. They’re all fun and they make for a good break from partying if you do that a lot.

Thanks a lot Pink Cupcake. So you like get driven to most of the parties? Do you call the frat brothers to drive you to them?

Also how academic is the atmosphere at wake? do people try rly hard? is it cuthroat at all?

“So you like get driven to most of the parties? Do you call the frat brothers to drive you to them?”

For the first semester, it’s very easy for everyone to get to parties. If it’s on campus, everyone is allowed in, and you don’t even need to call the brothers – they run shuttles constantly from the freshman dorms. After first semester, it’s a little harder to get rides. Girls always get rides, but guys have a bit of a tougher time – however, if you make friends in frats, it’s really not hard at all. Certain frats don’t care as much as others do. It’s sort of hard to explain unless you go here, but it’s literally impossible to go to a fraternity a lot and nottt make friends, you know? There’s one fraternity here that has “late night” which is basically a dance party that opens up late on most nights, and literally everyone is invited all of the time – plus it’s in walking distance from campus.

Some guys complain about getting rides to parties, but none of my guys friends ever really have a problem. Plus, you’ll make friends who are girls when you come to Wake, and you can definitely get a ride with them. Lounge parties are generally open to everyone, too. The one great thing about Wake that’s different than other schools (i.e. my state school) is that I’ve never had to pay to get into a party, and neither have my guy friends. When things are open, they’re open. Once again, I would definitely not be concerned about this. Even after rush this semester, my guy friends who didn’t rush still don’t have a problem partying at frats.

Summary: It’s easier to get to frat parties in the beginning of the year, but you should be able to go wherever you want. It’s better if you’re with girls or if you have friends in the frat, but both of these things happen naturally. Lounge parties are usually always open to everyone (especially on Seize the Quad!!) and I’ve never seen anyone pay to enter.

“Also how academic is the atmosphere at wake? do people try rly hard? is it cuthroat at all?”

I will not lie to you. Academics here are really hard. I came from a high school that is legitimately the best college preparation possible, and Wake is HARD. You will have a lot of homework, lots of tests, and lots of writing. However, everyone here can handle the workload – Wake will not accept you if you can’t. You learn a lot here. The same guys you see doing keg stands at frat parties are in the library the next day, reading a ridiculously thick book on philosophy. Everyone here loves the library and spends a good amount of time in it.

Do not come to Wake if you expect it to be one big party. People here take their work very seriously, and it’s a very competitive school. Unlike other top universities, though, Wake isn’t what you’d call “cutthroat”. People are always willing to help you if you need it. There are tutors available, your professors will always answer your emails and have reliable office hours, and the people in your class will NOT screw you over. It is very difficult to get good grades at Wake, but the people here (99.9% of the time) are genuinely nice people. I’ve never felt like other students have wanted to screw me over here. Even in my one class that’s on a bell curve, I’ve received ridiculous amounts of help with the material. I was absent one day from class and TWO different people called me and asked if I needed a copy of the notes.

In short: Academics = hard. If you aren’t willing to work, don’t go to a top 30 school. You will work for your grades but when it pays off you’ll feel 100x better about it. Students = nice. Wake = not cutthroat. :)

^ It’s nice to hear that things aren’t cutthroat. I’m premed at Cornell right now, and we all sort of silently hate each other because one person’s success is another’s failure. When people found out that I had pulled off an A+ in gen chem, I got some serious hate-vibes. It’s not fun. Of all the kids I hang out with very few are premeds, because in our case having the same ambitions divides us, when it ought to be uniting us. Hopefully I’ll be able to transfer to Wake and things won’t suck so much.

are wake kids down to earth? please give me an honest answer…

do a lot of guys think they’re all that (or are there some)? im sure some football guys do?

Pinkcupcake - (or anyone who knows the answer)
Is it hard to get a decent GPA at wake? What is a decent GPA at wake? I ask because I have to keep a certain GPA to have my tuition paid for.

I applied early decision to Cornell (and was obviously rejected). A lot of people actually compare Wake to Cornell in workload. I hope you transfer here, though! Better weather + nice people = :)! Good luck! <3

“are wake kids down to earth? please give me an honest answer…”

Most of them are, surprisingly. A lot of kids from Wake come from upper-middle to upper class families. With some of them, you know it instantly … some of them, you’ll never know how much money they come from.

“do a lot of guys think they’re all that (or are there some)? im sure some football guys do?”

Same answer as above. There are some guys who do, and some who don’t. I have friends on the football & basketball teams, and they’re all really awesome people. You will obviously get guys and sports players who are full of themselves, but I would not say that that’s the majority.

“Pinkcupcake - (or anyone who knows the answer)

Hi  It depends what you mean by decent. Mine is a little over a 3.5, and I know people who did much better and much worse than I did. It really depends on what classes you take, what major you decide on, etc. If you can give me specifics (what major you’re planning on, what GPA you need, etc) then I can be of more assistance.

I just applied to Wake as a transfer, and if I get accepted, I plan on majoring in business. What can you say about grade deflation and average GPAs for students in Calloway?

“I just applied to Wake as a transfer, and if I get accepted, I plan on majoring in business. What can you say about grade deflation and average GPAs for students in Calloway?”

I have yet to encounter any grade deflation at Wake, so I can’t really comment on that part of this. Students in Calloway tend to have lower GPAs then other students at Wake, but it’s Calloway so it’s to be expected. The reason behind this is the tough core curriculum at Calloway.

Students who don’t want all the work that Calloway gives generally do an Econ major with an Entrepreneurship minor, but almost everyone who gets into Calloway stays there. They have a great program going on, and if it’s any consolation, the Calloway seniors who I know all have jobs lined up next year with a few exceptions.

I know their GPAs are pretty good on average. You will be spending more time in the library, but you’re going to learn a LOT. Also, GPA varies by major in Calloway – some majors are more difficult than others.

Thanks for the info. Just one more thing; when you say “get into Calloway,” does that mean you have to apply to the business school after your sophomore year? If so, do you know how hard it is or the average acceptance rate? Would it be like applying to Wharton or an equally competitive business school (<20% acceptance), or is the acceptance rate generally much higher? Say that I had full intentions of studying business at Wake, but I wasn’t accepted to the business school? What would happen? Thanks again for the info.

Yes, you have to apply to Calloway during your sophomore year. If you don’t get in, you can do as pink said above, and major in Econ or some such.

can anyone talk about the political science department?

Are classes mostly lecture based or seminar style for the polysci dept at wake?

Most people are accepted to the business school. If you’re really intent on doing business, study really hard for Calc, econ, & accounting. I don’t know many people who didn’t get into Calloway, but the ones I know who didn’t are doing econ / entrepreneurship. Chances are, if you didn’t do well in the prereq classes, you wouldn’t do well in Calloway, either. I’m pretty sure you can still take business classes @ Calloway and even minor(?) if you’re not in it, but you can only major if you get in. If you’re super intent on business, I would not be concerned at all – you’ll focus on your prereqs, do well, apply, & get in :)

"can anyone talk about the political science department?

Are classes mostly lecture based or seminar style for the polysci dept at wake?"

The poli sci department here is really good. We have some great professors in that department. Most classes are small lectures or seminar style (small lecture being 30 kids or less). My intro poli sci class is 30, I believe, and it only goes down from there. We get a good amount of discussion in that class, too. My Spanish class was only 16 kids (Span 216) which should give you a pretty good idea of the average class size (aside from intros) at Wake.
