I've heard different things about the social scene at WashU. Some people have told me it's a "work hard, play hard" environment, while others have told me that it's a very studious environment, and one that is lacking in the party department.

If you or anyone you know goes to WashU or has experienced the social scene there, could you give me your opinion?

i just finished my freshman year at washu and i would say it’s definitely a work hard, play hard environment. the frats are a common place to find students, especially among underclassmen. bars are also another popular option. STL has a few concert venues, including the pageant which is walkable from campus, so usually many students can be found at those, especially for shows like dayglow. also, sometimes people will go to club europe or somewhere similar if there’s an event. if you’re worried about having dead wknds, i wouldn’t worry too much but there’s almost always a frat open or a bar people are going to. i’m thinking the studious enviro comment may be in reference to the fact that if students do have a lot of work, they’ll give up going out that night (or at least that’s the experience my friends and i have had). washuers definitely like a good time but i think most people will agree that we also all care about our school work so if that means giving up a night of partying, then so be it.

for frat parties do you just show up or do you need an invite? also, how heavily do wash u students drink, and what is there to do for people under 21? thanks

In response to livenotonevil, you just show up. If they’re “full” then you wait in line and get in sooner or later. Drinking is probably the same as most colleges, although there are also lots of people who don’t drink at all. Things to do include concerts, going to the Loop where there are lots of stores and different restaurants, going to the Galleria Mall, Cardinals/Rams/Blues games, going to Forrest Park/zoo, going to the gym.

There’s also the City Museum (look it up it’s amazing, it’s basically a huge adult playground, i spent 6 hours there and barely explored it, [city museum | where the imagination runs wild!](http://www.citymuseum.org/site/) ), the Muny, the Fox Theatre, Restaurant district in Central West End, float trips down the Meramac River (about 1 hour away) and the Lake of the Ozarks (about 2-3 hours away), the social scene at SLU, and the Pageant at the Loop (lots of great concerts) to name what I can off the top of my head.

For on-campus entertainment, there are all of the cultural shows and events put on by student groups such as Lunar New Year Festival, Diwali, Carnaval, WUSauce, Spirit of Korea, Holi on the Swamp (you can probably look these up on google adding WUSTL to it). There are also a few concert events on campus during the year. Every semester there is WILD (Walk In Lay Down) and WUSTOCK (which this past year had Gym Class Heroes perform on the South 40).
