I was wondering if any current students could tell me what the social scene is like at iwu. Is there a lot to do on the weekends? Is greek life a big part of the school? Also, I have a friend who goes to a small college and she has told me that there is a lot of gossip and that everyone knows everthing about everyone because of the small size. Is this true for iwu? Thanks.

I think baymom's post has portrayed the truest sense of IWU's social scene: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2144274#post2144274

In addition to that, I think greek is big here, but I'm not in it (BTW, I'm a sophomore bio and phil double major). I've gone to parties even though I'm not into greek at all. We always have things going on in Hansen like movies and concerts, music performances in Presser Hall, and musicals or plays.

While IWU may be a small school, and word can get around, the atmosphere is generally supportive. You'll find your friends and you'll get in a niche with them. If things don't work out with that group of friends, you will find another group who will accept you just the same (this is coming from experience). I loved my IWU experience and wouldn't have traded it for anything. Now that I'm in graduate school, I want to go back!
There is always something to do - whether you want to go to a party with friends, attend a movie night, concert, book signing, art sale, poetry slam... pretty much anything. The students are generally enthusiastic about learning, but they still make time for fun. The Dean of Students is just overall awesome - he puts together multiple activities for students and the community every weekend - sometimes 3 or 4 in a day! He works in the amazing Hansen Student Center, one of the most beautiful buildings on campus. I'm a huge proponent of getting out and doing things on campus. Even if you go to an event alone, you'll soon find someone else from your fencing class or chemistry lab to talk to or sit with!

Greek life is a pretty big presence on campus. I have found as a first year student that life can be lonely on the weekends if you do not party. Movies are a good available option every weekend, but once they end there is little to do but party.
