social scene

i'm going to be a freshman next year at wcas and have a few questions about the social scene. since evanston is right near chicago, do people go out to bars and clubs a lot on the weekend or do they tend to hang around evanston and do more lowkey things? will i not be able to get into these bars/feel left out if i dont get a fake id? and if i do get a fake id will i end up having to buy alcohol for my entire hall?

here's the deal....the only time people really go into chicago (at least underclassmen) to party is for frat/sorority date parties, formals, crush parties, etc. Most people go to a couple bars in Evanston that are very easy on IDs...bars in the city are not as easy. If you have a fake, people will probably ask you to buy for them, but it's up to you whether you give in or not..haha. It's easier for girls to get into bars (and parties for that matter) than guys....girls pass back IDs a lot, whereas if you're a guy, you might feel more left out without one. Personally, I'm not a big fan of bars being underage because I feel like it's a lot easier to get in trouble that way than being at a house party...so I don't have a fake, and there were only a couple times that I kinda wanted to go to the bar and felt that I couldn't. I just think it's not worth that hassle, but some people love going to bars. If you get connections early enough, you'll have people to hang out with and a way into parties...

I and many of my friends go into Chicago often... It offers far better and more diverse attractions than the local ones in EV,IL.... NU students just need to be less fearful of the city and explore! Chicago is a world-class city, one of which few Northwestern students take advantage. So, the social scene is what you make of it... Will you spend all your weekends at some North-Campus frat drinking, or in a boring Evanston bar, or will you explore Chicago and all that it has to offer: it's up to you. :)

yea....Chicago is awesome....I was just saying that going to Chicago for bars isn't common, especially with a fake...it's really fun to go to the city and explore!

On the weekends, you'll usually just hang out with your friends, there'll be a frat party here and there but aside from the first couple quarters you'll end up figuring out what crowd you're in and just hanging out with the,. Most people go to chi as someone else mentioned for greek events and its usually easier to get in since bouncers arent as hard on ids. On mondays and thursdays people always go out to bars though, the keg deuce and now candlelight on thursdays as well. Deuce and candlelight are in chi and everyone goes but its north chi and close to evanston and they're pretty lax on IDs. The vast majority of people who go out on a regular basis in the NU social scene have IDs, since just about everyone goes to the deuce.

yea....and don't think that you need a good ID for the deuce...the bouncer laughs if you tell him the wrong bday...haha.

Ah the deuce......

so if i wanted to occasionally go to the deuce or something, would i need a fake, or could i get in being over 18 and then get someone else to buy me drinks? also, i hope to do FUP before new student week. will we get to go out to bars there/will i want an ID for that?

I don't know about FUP....but...the deuce is 21+, you need a fake, or to have friends who don't mind lending theirs out

For FUP you will be in Chicago's Loop for the 5 day period... so no, you will not have a chance to go out to any bars or anything. You also wake up very early to go volunteering in the city. In '04 we even got up one day to pick weeds in a park.. lol... good luck.

kk, what high school did u go to??

Central High School then Architecture and Design High School.

oh okay, just wondering, i'm originally from philadelphia too, but when i lived there i went to school in the burbs.
