I'm going into my senior year of high school and am interested in applying to Stony Brook....is it true that the majority of students go home on weekends? Or are there parties around campus for a good time? What is happening on weekends? what is there to do?

They say there is around 50% of students who commute to Stony Brook. There are 22,000 students total, so 11,000 are on campus. Even with that large percentage of students commuting each day, Stony Brook is still one of the largest schools in the country. There are tons of parties on and off of campus. You need to know people, that is the bottom line. You need to be active. I already have talked to a bunch of people, and know all about the parties at SBU. They happen Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Most of them are on Thursdays, since Friday night is when people leave to go home for the weekends.

There is a lot to do, you need to be active. Sports, Clubs, Activities, etc. SBU has it all. Ignore what people say about "SBU sucks" "SBU has the most unhappy students" etc. You need to find your own fun, that is all. The kids who said all this were kids who sat in the dorms ALL day and never went out. They expected you to come to them, when they were supposed to come to you. You need to join up and be active, and you will have a great time. I was at Orientation yesterday and had a blast, it is all good.

If you have any more questions let me know.

Zulj - Did I advise you yesterday? Are you in University Scholars? I think we might have met.

Chris

No idea what a "University Scholar" is, but I do not think so.

SBU is what you make of it. Also don't expect too much from the faculty b/c most don't care about the students.

i agree with zuljian. i went to orientation too yesterday. it was better than i expected. yay for thursday night parties! i worked my way around my schedule to get fridays off lol

thanks so much....***blazinyan, the faculty doesn't care about the students in what sense?

Most profs are too involved with their research to care about the student. Don't expect the rest of the staff in the school offices to know about scholarships that SBU offers that are on the website? They look at you with a blank face and most of the time when you are directed to an office, that office directs you back to your original destination. NOT HELPFUL when you in need of advice or financial assistance.

I see, well that actually brings me to another point...if anyone has advice on financial assistance regarding stony brook ,please fill me in.

Trust me, Stony will tell you what they tell everyone-- take out LOANS b/c they can't afford to give out scholarships yet they can afford to build a new stadium/sports recreation center. You tell me what's more important.
