I was basically just wondering what the general social scene and student body is like at penn...
I'm being recruited for the track team and if i got in/ could pay for it, upenn could be a really good choice for me. But I sometimes get a snobbish sort of vibe about penn and i hear the student body is mostly just preppy, kind of arrogant, and very aware/proud of the fact that they go to an ivy league school. I know that's a huge generalization but is any of that true? or is there a good mix of diverse, down-to earth people on campus? what's the social life like?

also, I want to get into the music industry for a living. is there a music scene at all and what's it like?

thanks
ps- does anyone know what kind of financial aid penn gives out? My family is pretty much middle to upper-middle income but we would not be able to afford penn without aid.

The stereotype is very prevalent on Penn’s campus. I love the school, and most of the people there are really friendly, funny, and pretty cool people in general, but I would also absolutely agree that the average Penn student is snobbish, preppy, and arrogant. If you can look past those things, you’ll love it here, but it’s definitely noticeable.

Most of the people I’ve talked to are pretty happy with their need-based aid from Penn. I don’t know if you’ve filled out the Fafsa yet, but they give you an expected family contribution, and the EFC I got from Penn was about $5000 less than what the Fafsa said.

What I just wrote is kind of confusing, so just picking some random numbers, say Penn costs $50000 to attend, and the Fafsa said I could afford $20000, then Penn said my family contribution is $15000 and gave me $35000 in scholarship aid.

I don’t know anything about the music scene. It’s completely unrelated to what I do. Sorry. :)

Here is a helpful video about Upenn’s social scene. It is a big party school.

[YouTube - theU.com - UPENN: “The Scene”](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMDMyk8FKx0)

thanks a lot that was definitely helpful

ok so according to that video penn kids smoke a ridiculous amount of hookah followed by or concurrent with taking shots and gettin it on w/ trees

Snobbish and preppy? Yeah, you get some of that at Penn (especially Wharton), but frankly it’s no worse than I experienced at USC before I transferred.

If you are interested in doing music industry work for a living, apply to USC’s program in music industry: Los Angeles is cranking out music every hour for films, commercials, and television shows in studios all around the city, not to mention all the music qua music that is produced. It’s one of the best programs in the country and is situated in a place where your skills will be immediately relevant: Philadelphia really doesn’t offer that and just doesn’t have the infrastructure quite yet to support it. That being said, Philly is a great place and certainly has good opportunities for music, but not really for what you want. Good luck!

yeah USC is actually pretty high up on my list but from what i understand they don’t really give great financial aid.
i was also a little concerned about its rep as the ‘university of spoiled children’
is this stuff true? how did you like usc/ why’d u transfer?

USC is generally more laid back and I never really got a spoiled/bratty vibe from people, but then again, I mostly worked/hung out with a handful of music school students. I say apply and see what they give you in aid. (Also, you should visit and see what kind of feeling you get from the campus/atmosphere.)
