Social Science Major to Med School?

Does anyone know if it's possible to get your undergrad in a social science but still get into a med school? I read somewhere that some schools were looking for people with majors in sociology and anthropology. Any truth to this?

Yes you can be any major and still apply to medical school as long as you have completed the mcat and the prerequisite classes. And no there are no medical schools that look specifically for anthropology or social science majors.

@tajarimus it is definitely possible to get accepted into Medical school as a Soc/anthro major, a lot of medical schools like to have diversity in the majors…though most medical school dont require a Natural Science degree, they just want you to have all the neccesary pre requisites…the reason why most aspiring med student get a Natural Science degree, is because basically they are using those courses for Medical school, being a soc/anthro major, you will just have to double the amount of work, by having to fulfill your Social science requirement in addition to all the Biology/Chemistry courses you are gonna have to take for medical school.

Even if true, it probably means less than you think. I can imagine that the admissions committee at med schools might decide to make a focused effort to be sure that they have some non-science majors in their entering class. But even if this is true, it does not mean that choosing one of these majors is the easy path in. They get enough apps from people with every major so that they can still find those with top grades, research experience, etc. even though they were Sociology or Anthro majors.

Since this is a xfer forum I assume you are now at a CC. I want to add that there is some debate as to whether taking all the med school requirements at a CC is a good path; some feel that you ought to take a few science classes at the 4-year to show you can do top caliber work. Search thru the pre-med forum for more info.

Yes, you can definitely major in sociology, political science, dance, anthropology, ANYTHING but you have to get a Bachelors, finish your Pre-Med requirements, take the MCAT and then apply to med schools. Don’t forget to volunteer. Also, don’t even worry about getting letters of recommendations. People love to make things complicated on here. Get to know your professors and go visit them during office hours. Honestly, I don’t think it’s much of a big deal to finish half your pre-med pre-reqs at a CCC. However, it’s also good to call about 2 medical schools and ask them about their opinion. Check out this website: MDapplicants.com

You’ll see mostly every medical school listed in the U.S. (again MOSTLY) and their stats and MCAT scores of accepted, waitlisted, and denied students. Best website ever. Good luck with anything. if you need help please message me I’d love to help. I know a lot and I’d love to share my information with you.
