The prevailing stereotype about UCSD is that it is a big math and science school. That's great, but I'm a Poli Sci- International Relations major, so I was wondering how the social sciences (ie psych, sociology, poli sci) were at UCSD? I've heard that the Poli Sci dept at UCSD is pretty good too, just overshadowed by the other depts. Can anyone confirm/disprove this?

I can just tell you that the poli sci classes i've taken so far were great.
Poli 12 is intro to international relations with prof. roeder. he's really good, he also has a freshman seminar about international diplomacy.

you should definetly check that out. this year he only had poli 12 first quarter as far as i know so i recommend you take it. =]

EDIT: that is only if you decide to attend UCSD. =P

There are some really impressive courses and professors under the Ethnic Studies and Literature departments, too. Be sure to check those out, or take some freshman seminars in different departments.

I'm a political science (international relations) major, and from what I've heard, the political science department is well respected, with a well-respected faculty. It's definitely overshadowed by the sciences.. but that isn't surprising, considering that ucsd is one of the top research universities in the world.

I took poli 12 (with Roeder) last quarter, and I definitely recommend taking the course.

Um, IR/PS is a big deal at UCSD and UCSD has a top ten poli sci department. The Econ department is also in the top ten.

yayyy more Political Science/International Relations majors! my friends thought i was crazy for applying under that instead of something like bio or engineering. glad to hear its well respected!
