After the death of my father my mother has been getting ~$600 in Social Security benefits. I have been getting ~$14K in benefits yearly. However, this payment will all stop in December when I become 18.
I completed the CSS Profile a few weeks ago and it just asked for SS benefits for parent but not for me. However, after logging onto the Barnard Portal it’s asking me to include my own 2017 1099 form outlining the benefits I receive from SS.
My question is how much do they care about the SS benefits I receive? It’d kinda suck if those were included in their calculations since I stop receiving any money next month.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Contact the Barnard financial aid office and see how you can explain this.
Are you also saying there is NO question on the Profile that asked for your SS survivor benefit? I mean maybe there isn’t.
@BelknapPoint do you know!
No; each college will have their own policy on stuff like this, possibly even treating it on a case-by-case basis.
@BelknapPoint I know the colleges will each decide how to treat this as it is ending.
My question is more about the Profile. Is there no question that asks for student SS survivor benefits? Maybe not?
I don’t know about the current version. I haven’t seen Profile in several years, and as far as I know, you can’t just pull it up on the internet like you can with FAFSA. If anyone knows differently please let me know where the 2019-2020 Profile can be viewed online, without accessing through a registered College Board account.
Your benefits should continue until you graduate from high school, even if you turn 18 in December.
@twoinanddone
I think this student’s concern is that these benefits won’t be there when she goes to college. They won’t be available to pay her college costs.
I think she needs to contact Barnard. I’m sure this is not the first time this has happened.
My D will be in the same situation in one year when she applies, so I will be following this thread with interest.
