social security benefits, SSI and the dreaded FAFSA!

i am currently collecting both survivors benefits and SSI due to my disability.

the question is whether or not i should put both amounts down on the FAFSA for next year? for years i have only recorded the yearly amount of my survivors benefit down because i receive a form 1099 every year for it and not for the SSI (i wonder if that is due to the fact that the amount of my SSI monthly benefit is around $60?).

anyway i await all responses....especially from the FAA's in the forum and any senior members.

Well up till now I believe you should have been including the SSI as untaxed income on FAFSA. But I think the new rules passed in September actually allow you to exclude certain SSI benefits.

from the summary at Search Results - THOMAS (Library of Congress)

[quote]
Excludes welfare benefits, Earned Income Tax Credits, federal special fuels tax credits, untaxed foreign income, untaxed Social Security benefits, and the additional federal child tax credit from the income and benefits which are considered untaxed and thereby included in student need analyses.

I am not sure when that is applicable - parts of the bill affect the next school year and parts don't start until 2009.

thanks swimcatsmom. i guess that i will have to look that up and let u know what i find out about the effective dates.

according to what i've read, social security benefits will not be excluded from the FAFSA calculations until july 1, 2009.

by the way swimcatsmom... the feds came out with the 2008-2009 efc worksheet (for those who would like to calculate the efc by hand) today. you'll find it at ifap.ed.gov. click "what's new" when you get there. it is within the list of articles you will find there.
