social security number necessary? (not applying for fin aid)

on the common app and the supplement there is a blank to input your social security number. i was too lazy to dig it up, and so i never put it in. considering how it's optional (as in you can submit your supplement without it), do you think this will disadvantage me? i'm only asking because the university of california just sent me an email asking for my SSN despite the fact that online it doesn't make it a requirement.

so does anyone know if my SSN needed? and if so, how could i send it to uchicago?

It’s just a bureaucratic thing that makes it easier to manage your application materials. It has no bearing on your application. If they need it, they’ll ask and give you instructions on how to proceed.

okay thanks!

Exactly what Kmad said, it just makes it easier for them to keep track of the various parts of your application. I’d put it, its not like they’re in the business of scamming you
