My understanding is that decisions (UPENN DSW) should begin to be released today - Wednesday with acceptances occurring possibly via phone. Anyone with similar/different information.
Wow I was going to create a post on this since I did not see any posts for 2020. I applied and I am still waiting. Did you interview early in the application process?
I interviewed on 2/7/2020. I called up beginning of March as I received an acceptance from another program. I was told acceptances would be finalized 4/13/2020.
Well I don’t think I have been accepted (I’ll say reason why later). Good luck, I hope you get accepted!
Good luck to you as well. We will all know soon.
Hello. I’m so glad I stumbled upon this thread. I’ve felt so alone thru out this application process. You don’t know who’s applying and you can’t confine in people bc they don’t get it. My ultimate goal is to become a teaching professor, oversee a free clinic for MSW students and perhaps become a program director. What are your hopes for joining?
First, I want to commend you on your perseverance. I saw that you applied last year. I applied this year and interviewed on 02/24. I have not heard anything from the program and my portal isn’t updated. The DSW director left so idk if that has impacted the admissions process. Where else did you apply? I applied to Penn and University of Alabama.
I was waitlisted last year and for the first time in a number of years, all selected applicants enrolled. This year I also applied to Rutgers and University of Tennessee. I only applied UPenn last year. After I was accepted at Rutgers this year, I withdrew from Tennessee. Teaching is definitely on my list as is continued clinical practice, and exploration of relational cultural theory. I also have an interest in MSW curriculum.
And I am also glad to be conversing with others who are interested in DSW programs.
Thanks so much for replying! Wow, congrats on your admittance to Rutgers! That’s an excellent program! I hear that Penn has a low yield rate. We share a lot of similar interest. What drew you to Penn?
I spoke with over 10 DSW alum and heard about their experience first hand and it sound unmatched. I’d love for them to host another immersion opportunity. I love the curriculum and synchronous classroom. I feel the program is established and respected by other institutions, which is important to me. I could go in and on.
The Rutgers program is great but I concur with what you stated about UPenn. I have heard the same from alums. My 2016 practice IV professor at NYU is an alum, he is also my current outside supervisor. He speaks very highly of the program and it really is in line with what I would like from the experience. I also enjoyed the alums from my interviews.
Yes! The interview was the best part! I felt like we really connected and that they were rooting for me! Sounds like you’re an NYU alum- why didn’t you apply there?
I didn’t feel the NYU program was as mature as the other programs.
That makes so much sense. I also love that Penn’s dissertation is embedded into the program. I’ve read a few students dissertations- like my interviewer. We talked about their research.
Another program that I am considering is Tulane’s online DSW(hopefully I’m admitted and don’t have to apply). What I like is their emphasis on applied research and publishing while in the program. Have you heard much about Tulane’s DSW program? Their deadline isn’t until July or August.
I absolutely like the dissertation component of Penn. I do like the structure of the Tulane program and did not apply because of the late deadline but viewed it as a definite option.
Yeah, I’m rooting for us to get into Penn! It’s the full package. It’ll be interesting to see what electives are chosen as a group. There are a lot of new programs forming like University of Kentucky and California Baptist university. I just learned about Barry’s as well, which has a trauma focus.
Hopefully we will hear this week. You sound like you have passion for a program as do I, and I know that is important for this program. I have heard so many great things about their cohort development and structure and really believe its the right time for me to take aspects of my practice and study to another level. I also like how Penn does their integration and emphasis of theory.
Yes, we share that passion for the program. I think we both also value making well-informed decisions. I enjoy it’s focus in theory as well!
It sounds like you’re ready for this next phase of your life. What would you like to research?
Also, have you listened to The Clinician, a podcast from Penn DSW students? It’s really good. Here’s the link: https://www.sp2.upenn.edu/academics/doctorate-in-clinical-social-work/resources/the-clinician-podcast/#
Many research thoughts and many center around Relational Cultural Theory (RCT). I’d like my research to show how it has untapped uses - either in substance abuse treatment, working with adult children of mentally ill parents, or shame in young adults. I also think there are opportunities to provide an MSW curriculum for educating on the use of self, counter transference and RCT in a therapeutic dyad.
