Social Worker/Anthropology

Could I become a social worker with an anthropology degree?

You need a Master’s of Social Work. So look at some MSW programs and see what they require. I don’t think you have to have a BSW for all programs but you might be accelerated if you do. If you major in something else, you will want to check if there are prerequisites you must fulfill, you would want to include:

Biological sciences
Social sciences
Psychology
Statistics

In the state of Massachusetts, you can get a social work license with a bachelors in most any field, but you have to do 3500 intern hours working under a LICSW. You can get a provisional license (LSWA) in the meantime which some places will accept while you are working towards your license, allowing you to do nearly everything except clinical assessments. Of course, you need to pass the state exam in both cases. And, a MSW opens up doors that an LSW does not.

Yes, if you get an MSW. If the question is whether you can major in anthropology and then go on to get an MSW, the answer is yes.

If you want to be a social worker after undergrad, though, in most states you will need to get a BSW.

I checked out prerequisites to MSW programs a few weeks ago for someone else. A BA in anthropology would fulfill most of them - most schools wanted you to take one course in statistics, at least 20-30 hours in the social sciences and another 20-30 hours in the liberal arts and sciences which is basically everything not pre-professional (includes English literature, modern foreign languages, history and other humanities, and natural and physical sciences).

Thank you all for your answers!
