Socialist and/or Communist Revolutionaries: discuss stuff

I just wanted to note the Edo period of Japan. It obviously wasn’t a communist state, but I’d like to point out the power of societal pressures if the correct values are developed in a country. The incentives in Japan were certainly not economic - people wanted to fulfill their duty and maintain the loyalty and respect of society. Furthermore, while the nation at the time wasn’t the most technologically advanced (they were in some areas), the individuals were highly productive and efficient - again, a result of duty. Often, if one valued money, they were frowned upon, as seen by the low social status of merchants and others. Also, the population of Japan in 1750 was over 1 million (wiki), so I wouldn’t consider small scale. This demonstrates how effective a system can be if we emphasize certain values.
