I hate this thread.

I mean, you really need to ask if socialzing with people from other races is ok?

no, it's never ok. people from other races are evil.

no, it's never ok. people from other races are evil.

Also, the title to the thread is all wrong - it should be "socializing with people from different cultures".

Really, there is no difference btwn 2 white Americans socializing and a white American and an assimilated/Americanized/"whitewashed" Asian-American, Hispanic-American, etc. socializing.

And, for instance, an assimilated/Americanized/"whitewashed" Asian-American would have the same issues (overcoming cultural differences) socializing w/ an Asian from Asia as would a white American.

pmvd: What's wrong with people from other races?

The pervasive myth is that there is no white ethnic identity and that whites don’t self-segregate just like other groups. Most white people will only have white friends, with maybe a few minorities. Very few white people will enter into a social clique that is dominated by another ethnic group, although I have seen exceptions.

In my opinion, I think the fundamental road block to true integration is that most white people don’t know what it’s like to be “The Only ______ Person in the Room” for a long period of time. Most minorities have grown up constantly preoccupied with their race and what others’ preconceptions are of them because of their race. This is an exhausting endeavour and may make people neurotic or paranoid. History shows us that when white people are put in similar circumstances where their race suddenly becomes prominent, they escape that situation as soon as possible. Most minorities don’t have that luxury, unless they retreat to a mono-ethnic enclave.

I think there’s a lack of empathy on both camps, the white and non-white. The white people don’t understand why non-whites are uneasy in a predominantly white group, while the non-whites are too suspicious of the whites’ motives when they just mean well.

^^ That reminds me of Du Bois’ idea of double consciousness, which most minorities (residing in an area where they are among the minority) are probably familiar with.

I agree with pvmd, the thread is somewhat ridiculous and thoroughly annoying. However NBACHRIS is right- integration ftw
