Sociology: Cal or UCLA?

I'm sooo torn!
Prestige at UC Berkeley or sunny California weather at UCLA?
As a transfer student, which institution will allow me to graduate within two years?
Which will provide more opportunity when I begin applying for grad school or employment.
Which campus will be more FUN in terms of social scene, recreation, and so on.

If UCLA offered more in FinAid should I just go there? Would I really miss out on the advantges of attending a prestigious unversity if I don't go to Cal?

Ahhhhhhh, only two more weeks to decide!!!

Visit the campus and see how you like the vibe.

Don’t go to a campus just for its prestige, the last thing you want to do is stay at a school for another 2-years and hate it.

Lol, the sad thing is I did visit both campuses. And both are beautiful in their own distinct ways. It’s just Cal lacks in weather, Lol

@lawlking have you already transferred? Which school do you go to?

either school is fantastic. the weather is great up here in northern california, and there is a lot of smog in LA—but i like LA too. not sure where you are living now? it is a difficult decision. i love the students at Cal. and it pulls more clout overseas where i work most of the time. so i chose Cal. and i don’t have to live in the east bay, i live in sausalito, a cool town with an easy commute to Berkeley. good luck.

I live in LA, but I am leaning towards Cal. Just scared of the transition I guess

well, just consider which degree you would prefer: one from Cal or one from UCLA. both great. and the move would be fine, if you want to come here. california is great north and south.

Cal is not THAT much more prestigious than LA, so I don’t believe that is a good enough reason to choose it. Unless of course, you prefer the atmosphere and campus, than I would say go to Cal.

Btw, I am a Soc major heading to LA =]

citiz3nerased,
right. however, it is true that Cal’s sociology department is number one in the nation.

Glad you chose LA! Do you think you will be able to graduate within two years, considering soc is an impacted major at LA?

I’m hoping I can! My old co-worker is a current soc major at ucla, graduating this Spring. She said its a short major and is also a global studies minor and is graduating in the regular 4 years span.

keep in mind if you want to do business overseas there is NO comparison between Cal and UCLA. Cal outranks almost all other schools in the minds of continental europeans. and impresses people far beyond most of the ivy leagues including Yale, Stanford, Brown, you name it. Dartmouth, Georgetown, Duke (never heard of them)Cal and Harvard. are the numero uno schools in the minds of foreigners. although asia likes Stanford and has a different view altogether, but europe hands down Cal is the place to be. people in the US have no idea how far reaching a Cal degree actually is beyond US borders. fortunately, i would say that UCLA is viewed with more clout than a lot of the ivy leagues abroad as well, but seen more as a glam school with a lots of football and cheerleaders (regardless of the realty). food for thought, so, think long and hard before turning down admission to Cal. i know how this works because i attended one of the most difficult schools to get admitted to in europe, insanely famous overseas, and no one has ever heard of it here in the USA and could care less. it makes a difference in this crazy world. anyway, Go Bears, Go Bruins! good luck dudes.

Hmm, I lived in Europe and whenever I talked about schools it was rare to find somebody familiar with Berkeley.

Could point northbeach

@elephapple, well were they familiar w/ ucla?

If you plan on working and living in LA after graduation then get your degree from UCLA.

@SMCguy sorry to bother you but do you by any chance know how long it takes to get the IGETC to process at SMC? I submitted mine on thursday and was wondering…do you also by any chance know if we get some sort of letter telling us if we qualify for IGETC? like a confirmation letter I suppose.

Thanks!

RCA, I’ve heard all sorts of reasons for attending this or that school, some good, some ridiculous. I think there are better reasons to go to a school than prestige or weather (although some people really can’t take this change), but they are important nonetheless. It’ll depend.

Personally, well 2 months ago I was set on UCLA. The music industry is there, it’s close to home, I don’t mind traffic, it’s huge, etc. Then I visited a professor from my CC last week to say goodbye, and he told me that since I’d lived in Southern California my whole life, I needed a complete change. I thought about it and ended up registering for Berkeley.

Whatever you chose, try not to get paranoid with people telling you “well… so and so is more prestigious in so and so country”. I’ve heard so many people say Cal is highly prestigious in foreign countries, and many others who say that that’s an exaggeration.

Another thing, department rankings are usually referring to grad school. Undergraduate education, wherever you go, is really broad and not much different in any given school. But there are differences, so rather than worrying about prestige, look at the sociology catalogs and schedules for both schools.

@Slamos

After much thought, I decided to go to Cal!
Yayyy, for a new experience in NorCal

And you are totally right about ranking for grad school!

See ya at Berkeley!
