Hey everyone! This is a forum dedicated to sociology majors who applied to CAL. I am super nervous for Friday. I have applied to CAL with a 3.73 overall GPA and a 4.0 major GPA. This is a non-impacted major. Maybe we can start a discussion?

bump 10 char

PsychBruin2012: Did you get into UCLA?

@joxygirl: Got rejected from UCLA as a psychology major. What about you? Are you a sociology major?

Oooh, I have a 3.7 too!
Cal’s sociology department is #1 in the nation!
I got accepted to UCLA, but knowing that kind of info makes choosing between LA and CAL much harder for me.
That is…if I get accepted to CAL.

Go Bears!!

@rca2446: OMG that’s amazing, congrats! Do you think it will be hard to even get in? I talked to the counselor who came to my school and she said 3.7+ is the GPA they were looking for. Well…CAL is #1 in the nation for Sociology! Are you nervous?

Yessss, very nervous. I’ll just have to find ways to distract myself all week :)

@rca2446: I am sure you’ll get in! It’s harder to get into LA than CAL for Sociology/Psych. Oh gosh, I hope I am right about this being not that difficult to get in. Let me know how it goes!

Psych major here, just checking in to give my fellow social science buddies some love. :)

I got into la psych with a 3.72, sorry you didn’t, but id be willing to bet its cus you’re getting into cal.

@Acuvue & Hellolily: Aww thanks guys! Congrats Hellolily! Did you guys apply to Cal?

Nah. Ucla is my dream. I never thought of going to college, I used to think I was to cool for school in high school but when I went on a hs field trip I fell in love.
I was convinced I’d be rejected and started getting ready to go to sb. I was totally surprised.
Well anyway good luck, I really think you’ll get in don’t be down about la.

That’s amazing! :] Good luck at UCLA! You’ll do fine! It’ll be so much fun. I actually called them to see why I got rejected and they put me on hold to view my application…and they said that there was no indicators of me being rejected and that I had good grades yet UCLA had so many applications that they only had to choose a select few. &nd, that I shouldn’t worry about CAL. But, I came to the realization that SD might be the place for me. I’ve been telling myself that I want to leave my small town in Nor-Cal for something better.

Psychbruin, have you visited UCSD? It’s such a gorgeous location. It was one of my first choices but I didn’t end up applying because their prereqs were kind of annoying, but I would have been really happy to got there! It’s an amazing campus, great location, excellent school. :)

Wait so they didn’t even look at your application? That’s not right. So it was all based on luck?

What is with this constantly brought up idea on this forum that some admissions are based on luck? Schools have certain standards that applicants must meet to be considered, but that doesn’t mean everyone who lives up to them gets to be admitted. Let’s not forget that the number of applications they receive GREATLY exceeds the number of people they can take in, and judging by what UCLA told them, PsychBruin2012 may have been admitted had there been less applicants, but unfortunately there wasn’t.

I feel sorry for all of those people who got into schools like UCLA with “low” GPAs and people just assume they got lucky. You have no idea what the rest of their profile looks like, and GPA is only one of the many factors they look at (albeit a major one).

I got in as a psych major with a slightly lower gpa than psychbruin, I don’t think I got in by luck because I know even though my gpa was slightly low I had many other things going for me.
I guess I just understood what paychbruin said because after your explanation it makes more sense.

@Acuvue: Yeahh I have! It’s soo pretty! Where will you be headed to in the fall then?

@Hellolily: They said that I am a competitive applicant. My GPA was on point. They had no specific reason as to why they denied me.

@TreDelta:I agree with you. I’ll tell you 4 other factors that people think that aren’t greatly impacted minus extra-curricular & personal statement: (not in any specific order)

Race

Income

First-generation to attend college

Non-traditional student

I still think you’ll get into cal.
I think we’ve gotten so used to the idea that gpa is all that matters but if you look at what ucla wants they clearly say that there are other factors. I pretty much met all of these

Personal Criteria
Our review also considers personal criteria. The personal statement you submit with the application is the best place to discuss the following information more in depth:

Employment while attending school
Family responsibility
Returning to school where early grades are not indicative of strong academic performance
Involvement in campus organizations, student government, community service, or clubs
Military service
Circumstances that may have prevented students from achieving their highest overall academic
performance

@Hellolily: I hope so! Friday seriously couldn’t come any sooner. What makes me upset is that I could have been at SD almost done with my classes by now…but I waited an extra year to see my other options. Out of the personal criteria I have ALL except for: returning to school and military service. I wrote everything else on that list on my application. Ahhh seriously crossing my fingers! Did you apply for CAL?
