My entire college career I was on the path toward law school, only to realize that it's not what i actually want to do. At this point, I believe that my application is not strong enough to gain acceptance to a Phd program. With that said, I think it would be best to go for a Masters program. As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley I did not have a thesis or honors thesis , so it would strengthen my application to have the research background of a sociology masters degree. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Most people earn a Masters on their way to a PhD.

Get into a Masters program, kick butt for two years and then decide if you want a PhD.

It’s best to get into a Masters program that also has a PhD track, as it can sometimes be difficult to transfer to another school to complete a PhD. However, it is not impossible (obtain MS at one school/PhD at a different school) for a strong candidate. It’s actually done quite frequently, but I think it is easier to continue along at the same grad school.
