Sociology

Hi! I was admitted to UCI as an International Studies major, but I'm starting to lean towards Sociology. What is there to know about their Sociology program?! :)

How come you are leaning towards Sociology? I am an international studies major and I love it! International experience is mandatory in this major and this past summer, I studied in Korea through UC EAP and it was such an awesome experience. Next year, I will be studying in Vietnam for fall and possibly go back to Korea for spring, or go to Taiwan. I hope to one day work for a non-profit, or an international organization. I believe that this major, and finding an internship in these countries, is definitely helping me prepare for that. International Studies majors are very enthusiastic about traveling and learning other cultures, but you won’t know until you try it out. So, give IS a chance :-)

I’m in the same situation as mpadua (mostly). I’m debating whether to major in International Studies or Sociology, or some combination of the two. My question to you, Chikara, is why do you feel IS has prepared you better than Soc could have? I’m not sure how much you know about Soc, but just let me know what you can. I direct it towards you because you seem to be heading in the direction I hope to someday, though anyone’s thoughts are appreciated.

@Chikara – I want to get into learning more about the way people interact with each other. I think I find myself questioning peoples’ actions on a day to day basis so I suppose that’s why I’m leaning towards Sociology. I’m pretty interested in the way the humans work, but not so much in a psychological or physiological sense. On the other hand, I also hold a fascination for the different cultures our world has and that’s why I wanted to go into International Studies. Unfortunately I don’t know too much about the major, and after doing some research it seems like International Studies is more of a political route? But after what you told me, I really might try it out. Thank you!

Do you think you can tell me more about it? What kinds of topics do you study? I’m also interested in doing something non-profit on an international scale, but what else would I able to do with an International Studies major?

@Ramothka Can we do a combination of the two? haha

@mpadua I was contemplating taking a major in one and a minor in the other, or even majoring in both down the line. That’s what I meant in the combination of the two.

If you want to learn about how people interact, I highly suggest walking outside, taking a look at the world and TALKING to others. Maybe get a job in sales of some sort…

Sociology as a major teaches you relatively little and is essentially the same course from a different angle 20 times. I’m a “numbers guy” and I know more about soc than a friend of mine at UCLA with a 3.7GPA… Same goes for the anthro and psych majors I know, they can’t keep up with me in conversations about the very thing they’re specializing in.
